Asking on behalf of little sister.

She's 18 in April and is planning to take her HGV so she can be more independent and give mum a break. I don't understand how this affects her from that link- please may you explain in laymen's terms?

Lets say she decides to take the LGV C and not the LGV C1 which many do

1 - her intention is to drive LGV C before age 21 = she needs to pass initial driver cpc

2 - her intention is to only drive LGV C1 whilst under age 21 = no need to pass initial driver cpc

LGV C = those above 7.5 tonnes plated weight
LGV C1 = LGV rigids with a maximum plated MAM of 7.5 tonnes
LGV C1 is a subcategory of C

What size LGV will she be driving?

7.5 tonnes, but with the flexibility to drive bigger vehicles. So I guess she needs the initial driver CPC- if she's going to be doing the exams, she might as well do what she needs... How much will that cost?!

Thanks for alerting me to this. It means that when son is 18 in November and sits his LGV to drive our 18t horsebox he will also need to sit the cpc. Talk about multiple tests!

Can I double check there had been no changes iro this for drivers over 21?

Depends if the training school do it during the practical training or after it because for the second part of the initial dcpc the lorry will be needed

The first part of the initial dcpc is called module 2 and is done at the same theory test centre as the other theory and HPT tests
Cost for that is the test fee of £35 if my memory serves correctly and to pass it they need the theory test book, the driving large vehicles book as well as common sense

The second part is the practical called module 4 and that is done at the LGV practical test centre with the use of a LGV
The cost of that can be around £300 if done after the practical on road training and test
On that test (training required by LGV school) they get asked a variety of questions which can be about pre driver vehicle checks, hidden people or drugs etc, how to use a strap, chain tensioner or restraining bar.
They will need to physically demonstrate their answers as well as answering verbally

If there is no chance she will be driving anything bigger than 7.5 tonnes before her 21st birthday then don't bother with the modules 2 & 4

CAVEAT - THIS IS FOR THOSE DRIVING PRIVATE LGVS AND NOT FOR THOSE DRIVING LGVS COMMERCIALLY

No change for those over age 21

Your 18 year old son will need to pass both initial driver cpc modules 2 and 4 in order for him to drive that 18 tonner whilst still under the age of 21

He will not need to do any driver cpc periodic training because he will be over 21 before the 5 year expiry date on the DQC (driver cpc card) has expired

To be honest this is a little daft for those only wanting to drive LGVs over 7.5 tonnes privately between the ages of 18 and 21

To both of you with the son and daughter who are intending to do the LGV test...

Once they have the provisional on their respective licences they can go out on the road as LGV learners with anyone who has PASSED THE DSA TEST for that category* has held the relevant licence for 3 years, is over age 21 with L plates (car type) fitted to front and rear as well as correct insurance for a LGV learner

*New laws came out in April 2010 which prevent anyone supervising a learner in any of the C or D categories unless they have actually sat and passed the relevant DSA test for that vehicle in which they are supervising

This mostly affects those with the pre 97 LGV C1 on their licence as they cannot use that particular C1 for supervising

this completely explains the very confusing paper part of my licence then which basically says I have my full C licence but can't actually drive anything over C1 size until I'm 21. It does mention unless you have CPC but at the time I took my test I was told it was only necessary for commercial drivers. Fortuitously we decided to have a 7.5tonner built so parents can drive it on their grandfather rights so this doesn't affect me :) and I won't need to upgrade to HGV until after I'm 21. I am glad for the clarification however as it was rather confusing to take a test in a HGV have a licence for a HGV but be unable to drive a HGV! :D

At least you can drive the C1 7.5 tonner that you and your folks had built

If you really want to you could go and pass the LGV initial driver cpc modules 2 and 4 which would then allow you to driver over 7.5 tonnes whilst under age 21 but it probably it not worth the effort and money for your current situation
