I don't really even know how to start this post and i apologise if it is utter jibberish!

I have just got home from Liphook where i have left my girl in ICU

When i got to the yard this eve she was down the far end of her field (not unusual) laying down (V.unusual, seen only twice in 8yrs!)
I went down to her and she got up as i approached, i brought her up the field and into her stable, she looked uncomfortable but not stressed or upset at all, as i put her in her box she started scraping up the bed and stretching out (think navicular type stance then stretching back so her belly was quite close to the ground) i called the vet immediately and started walking her round the menage until he arrived, she has never to my knowledge had colic before but her symptoms were classic of mild gassy type colic.
He was there within 30mins (not bad at rush hour!) He examined her, heart rate fairly normal, temp 36.5 so normal too. He gave her 10mls of flunixin and tubbed her with 5ltrs of water with 150gms of epsom salts in and did a rectal examination.
We walked her for a good 10 mins then he re examined, he was concerend that the drugs hadn't had the effect that he had hoped for and she was still in discomfort so he called Liphook and referred her there.

I managed to arrange transport, what happened with that i can't bring myself to type because it was nothing short of a bl**dy nightmare, it basically ended up in us unloading and swapping boxes just off the slip road of the A3!!
But Lia, in true Lia style just took it all in her stride and walked off the trailer and straight into the lorry, good girl that she is

So finally at about 21.00 we arrive at Liphook, straight in to the examination room where she was looked at again, bloods were taken, she had a catheter inserted.
Further rectal examinations followed by a peranial(sp) tap and a scan of the under side of her belly, at this point the duty surgeon arrived, que more scanning and another rectal

poor little love.
After all the examinations were done the surgeon wanted to see her in the box relaxing, wanted to see her have a wee as her bladder was full and he could feel it as he was giving her the 4th rectal of the evening!

As if on que she had a huge wee ( i forgot to mention earlier that she passed dropping whilst in the lorry)

Basically, after all the examinations etc the vet thinks it is a case of her being very gassy and a possible kink in her intestine that has caused the digestive tract around the intestinal, colon type area to become enlarged and distorted making her rather uncomfortable

I have stressed to the vets that i am no prepared to put her through surgery, she simply wouldn't cope with the rehabilitation post op, she won't stay in, i could never keep her quiet enough to be on box rest she would turn herself inside out and cause more damage to herself.
However, i am hoping that it will not come to this, but i am a realist and her welfare comes very much before my feelings so is something i felt i should make the vets aware of.

I will no doubt have a sleepless night with my mobile and the house phone in bed next to me in case they call in the night.
Hopefully they won't need to call until tomorrow morning when the do all the routine daily updates.

I think what i am asking for is some 'get better soon' vibes for my little angel and if there are a few hugs for me, Lia is of course more important though!

'Get better soon mummies little angel, be a brave sausage for the vets and you can come home soon and go back to your lazy days out with all your girlie friends in the field. love you mummies little angel'

LOTS and LOTS of get better soon vives and hugs for you. She is in the best possible place and it sounds like everything is going to be ok from what you have written. Keep us updated on how she is.

Sending special vibes to your little angel, Lia. Lets hope she has just pigged out on the green stuff a little too much. We have had two horses on the yard show similar colic symptoms recently due to the amount of spring grass coming through. Our vets are also having a very busy time of it locally with colics.

Thank you all

I'm pleased to report that we have made it through the night without a phone call!

Fingers crossed she has had a good night and whatever is making her uncomfortable has eased of/been passed.

I haven't slept a wink, really not looking forward to work, i just want to get back to Lia, not that i will be of any help to man nor beast in my present state!

*edited because i can't spell!*

Oh crikey, poor you. Sounds like you and your vet did everything possible in a good short space of time. Fingers crossed for you both, my heart goes out to you. Chin up x

Huge hugs to you and healing vibes to Lia, I have just been looking for your number but washed my phone and loads are missing. Have you had an update this morning?
Keep me updated about the ginger beastie x x

Lots of hugs and good vibes. You sound so sensible and she is lucky to have a owner like you. The sound of your journey makes my hair stand on end, I can just imagine the stress of it, poor your dear horse sounds like a dream

Do hope it is good news and that she can come home soon.

Loads of 'get well soon' vibes for Lia, and hugs for you - you seem to have acted really quickly, so I do hope everything turns out OK for her

What brilliantly calm owner though I know you must be screaming inside. The very very best wishes to your 'little sausage'

I know exactly what you're going through as my 29year old pony went through the same scenario a year ago, though without the traumatic journey! He was in ITU for two nights with a displaced intestine but it luckily resolved without surgical intervention. They were quite willing to operate even at his advanced age as he was otherwise well.Fingers crossed for Lia and do try to get some sleep, they will phone if there is a problem(though to be honest i don't think i slept a wink the first night he was an inpatient!)He has been fit and well since his colic attack though has decided to cause me permanent stress by getting Cushing's,but that's a whole different story...Massive vibes to you both.
