I had the vet out the other day since my elderly tb had scabby bald patches developing on his saddle area. The vet came out, a young girl I've not had before, and said she thought it was mites. She gave him a Dectomax (sp) jab and told me to bath him (very old tb who lives out eeeek!) with some dog shampoo and would be back to jab him the next week.

Some other horses were itchy so the next day my mum was down and there were three vets (!!) down from different surgeries and they decided between them it was actually lice. My vet was giving jabs however my friends vet (who is very experienced and I trust) said that the jabs are pointless and just to treat with some hardcore louse spray. I cancelled my second jab and have been spraying every ten days but some other liveries are having second and third jabs and think I should have them. Help!!!!!

My boys coat is much less scurfy and the scabs have healed up with a good wash with hibiscrub so whatever creatures are there are definately dying out but I don't want to do the wrong thing but it is soooo hard when even the vets don't agree.

SOOOO........a)does anyone have experience of use of dectomax jabs and b)generally what do you do when vets dont agree.

thanks!!!!

My big boy has just had his annual (2nd) Dectomax injection along with another hairy cob who regularly get feather mites. Dectomax will only kill feather mites, it will not kill lice.

As far as the vets go, I would go with my own instinct. Always question the vets, they're not infallible. If in doubt, always ask HHO

Haha! So true.....love HHO! The impression I got was that it only kills lice. As his coat is improving I reckon I'll stick with the louse spray for now. Bloody stressful this horse-owning thing!

I use the pour on for cattle lice, all the vets over here recommend it, it is a fair price and does about 50 doses, so i do all my horses and then redo them 6 weeks later.
I do assume you can get something similar in the UK

erm Im not sure this would be the mites that my vet and I discussed, we had our first dectomax jag on friday - did your vet mention that it isn't licensed for horses and gave you a disclaimer to sign!!???

The skin tends to get thick and crusty - not bald, tends to be more on the legs as well.....

If I am not sure I tend to do all the homework I can to get a better understanding of issue - or get 2nd opinion as we have two vets - luck I have never hadd to do this as hey are brilliant..

Hope that it all works out but I would possibly question her diagnosis...

Lice would not in my opinion be treated the same as the mites

well prob easiest way is to use frontline spray down the middle of back and into the mane, its not licensed for use in horses but does work. you can get it online

Our cob had Dectomax jabs for feather mites, and it did work, along with clipping the legs out and hibiscrubbing for a while. I think he's had the problem for many years, so we have to keep on top of it. He's overdue to have his legs clipped again, when they are done we will spray with Canovel flea and tick spray, similar to Frontline.
