So we've all recently been told that a few horses on the livery yard have had/now have lice! I was speaking to another livery today and she was telling me she is just going to treat her 2 horses for them just as a precaution as it only cost a fiver or something which is a big difference to if the horse gets lice and has to get bed gutted and disinfected, and all rugs numnahs ect cleaned so i was thinking about treating mine too! Only thing is my mum said to get a few more opinion as she think treating them when they dont have it will mean if they get them the treatment wont work? if that makes sense! Anyway what would you do just treat them as a precaution or hold off and hope for the best?!

Chocolate digestives and milkshake on offer :D

Thanks :)

If it is of any help I had a new livery come in that had lice - they weren't apparent initially and can only assume he brought them with him from his previous yard.

Fortunately he and his companion were in a separate stable block and as were turned out together, none of the other horses on the yard were affected. Interestingly neither was his field companion.

I wouldn't personally treat unless your horse or equipment have had direct contact with the affected horse.

When I bought my youngster he had lice- admittedly he wasn't wearing rugs or saddlecloths then, but half a bottle of special shampoo got rid of them nicely (if only my vets hadn't forced me to buy a £25 bottle that I could have got for £5 out the saddlery  )

Well i need to go buy fly spray tomorrow anyway so will just try that one just now then and might get some shampoo ready just incase! Just dont want to risk it as staff/owner of the yard is saying if your horse has them you MUST gut stable disinfect and get all rugs cleaned properly which will be very expensive esp as we are on wood pellets whick costs alot to start up a new bed

lice, mites , ringworm. All part of the rich tapestry of horse ownership. Deal with it ,it aint a big issue. In the good old days we had powders and potions that worked, but then we joined europe and they banned everything that works because the ingredients are active and powerfull. :confused:The first to go was animalintex, The stuff you have now is just a pale immitation. The old coopers louse powder was absolutely deadly to lice,so it went. Fly repellant with citronella worked a treat. Now we have to call citronella a coat conditioner to avoid the ban.:rolleyes:They even tried to ban Dettol . :eek:Even the fence posts you use will now rot in about 6 tears because all the effective chemicals were removed from the pressure treatment a few years ago, And as for good old creosote, if you use the stuff you are in league with the devil:cool:

Hi, I am the owner of the horse that contracted the lice, i would like to inform you that i noticed my horse was twitching on Sunday & my first instincts were that it was an allergic reaction to his change of feed.

Monday the vet was at the yard so i asked his advice & he advised it was a sensitive horse that was reacting to fly s. I know my horse & have never in the 4yr s i have had him seen him react like that over fly s!

Monday evening i checked in his mane & noticed one Louse!! I was mortified!! I spoke to my field mates & livery's either side of my stable & informed them to try & contain the situation. Later i have discovered the source & it originates else wear on the same yard!!

Tuesday my horse & field companions was treated, but the vets did not advise or give enough treatment to treat a second time & also treat the equipment! (I find this a little concerning). I took it upon myself to ordered bottle of 'swich' which contains the pemetherin solution to kill the Lice; due to the life cycle of both the sucking & chewing louse, we are treating the whole field on the 22nd May & then again 5th June 2 weeks apart, all bedding will be disposed of & equipment treated with the same treatment as the horse!

I am concerned that there has been reports of lice on the yard before & that i was unaweare of until now. There is no other possible solution i can come to that would indicate they had come from else where due to past events.

I am taking all possible precautions but i do feel the culprits need to take further action to eradicate the problem! otherwise the lice will just come back & infect the whole yard again!!! Hope some of this info has put your mind at ease.

Meh, Lice, they are ming but not really a big deal unless you let it get out of control, my boys used to get them at my old yard, something to do with rats and hay I was told.....

Anyways my vet prescribed this stuff https://www.pfizeranimalhealth.com.au/products/369/barricade-s-cattle-dip-and-spray.aspx its both a prevention and cure, really potent stuff works 100% of the time with no massive effort and I didn't once clean any of my brushes or rugs etc. Usually lasts up to a year and also helps reduce ticks etc.

Spray with Deosect. Works on lice and also long acting fly repellent. Spray once per month. About £26 a tin but lasts ages as water it down. Really good stuff

I've used this before?

http://www.jetsetequestrian.com/Der...poo/cat/1/sub/3/subcat/24/product/1253/page/3

I dont think any of the horses at the yard actually had lice but my mare was very itchy! Dont think it does any harm to de-louse, does it? I bathed them in this shampoo, then 5 days of louse powder just to be on the safe side. Then bathed them again in about 2 weeks. Also, all our stables got done with jeyes fluid!
Hope This Helps!
