I think my 13.2 pony has got lice, he is rubbing all the bits of himself he can scratch on the fence posts. I cannot see anything in his coat but apparently it can be very hard to see sucking lice unlike the biting ones. Looking at treatments I am worried that if I use Deosect I will end up overdosing if I want to get it to the skin through his thick coat and I would rather not have to clip him. How effective are the new essential oil products? A positive experience would be welcome, thanks.

I've used Deosect on a pony with a thick winter coat and it still worked brilliantly. You really don't have to drench all the skin for it to work. I just used a sponge that I squeezed quite dry and rubbed it in well to the bits I could get to, mostly the neck and back (pony was a bit wild!). The amount that appeared dead almost immediately proved there were a lot more than what I could see just by parting the fur.

Thank you. If I do not need to soak him in it it should be manageable then.

I am going to try and do the same as Meleeka. Not sure it would remain as effective in a greater dilution?
What size is the pony? I just roughly worked it out at half a horse, for my 12hh, so 5ml Deosect to 250ml water. I used a measuring jug and a syringe. I figure that you'll lose a bit left in the sponge at the end. You don't have to be that scientific about the amount, but if you aren't happy about that that then it's 3ml for 150ml.

Thank you. I treated him this afternoon much to his disgust. He hates the smell! I used to put Deosect on all my horses in Summer and still have all the stuff needed. Having a much smaller very hairy equine of just 13.2 just made me a bit cautious as I know it is powerful stuff.

Make sure you treat again in 2 weeks! Just to catch any eggs that go on to hatch. Mine hated it too but he was bigger so I had to use more, absolutely stinks and he went baserk in the stable after I’d treated him I think the smell must have been horrible for him. It’s effective though!

Also do your rugs grooming kit, tack, saddle pads, bandages boots and anything that has touched him. I just sprayed it on the rugs and allowed to dry and disinfected everything in his stable, changed bedding etc too

Happy to report my pony now seems free of lice.i have already put a reminder in my diary to treat him again in two weeks time and all the stuff that has touched him is going into a sealed plastic bag with Lincoln louse powder for a few days then washed (he is never rugged).
