One om foals has picked up some lice and I am looking for an effective treatment , I have bought some powder and applied that , but they have their winter coats coming out as well so are getting hot and itchy with that as well , any ideas ?

deosect(has to be greatly diluted),make it up in a spray bottle, then spray along the topline and rub in with rubber gloves.you need to repeat a week later.

I second Deosect, can then be used as a great fly repellant too

spot on from the vets or coopers fly spray but before applying anything give your horse a good bath in some insecticedatal shampoo!

My pony has recently had Lice for the first time

Horrible things.

I used Coopers and it worked a treat, I did 3 doses with 2 week gaps inbetween each one (he was very hairy and it made the first dose quite hard to apply!)

It worked a treat though, all the nasty blighters were soon killed off and were very visible on his coat the morning after! I gave him the third dose last Friday just to make sure that there were no new hatchings, and he is now all clear.

He's been left with a few baldy/sore patches though, bless him - after reading some old posts on here I have just ordered some Microtek spray from the TailGator website which I'm hoping will help his coat and get him looking back to his normal heandsome self!

If you're not sure if you've killed them all call your vet out. Two injection 14 days apart. The first injection works really quickly, then you need the 2nd injection incase there were any eggs. totally painless and easy!

You have my sympathy, nasty little blighters aren't they?

I gave up waiting for Charley's coat to shed, it just wasn't happening, so in the end I attacked him with the clippers.

Pretty drastic, but at least I can see what the damage is, and get to the lice on his skin. I am using regular de-lousing powder plus a good bath in medicated shampoo to sort out his patchy, flaky skin and scabs. Gross.

Good luck.

Had them on my shetland pony. Tried lice powder (hopeless) then tried Coopers and they all went after 2 goes with 2 weeks apart couldn't believe it.

Coopers is a spray, its actually a fly repellent aswell.

It comes in a bottle which has a few doses worth in it - depending on the size of your pony/horse.

My pony needed 150ml dose then 2 weeks after the same again to kill of any new live that may have hatched. I did a 3rd dose to make sure after a further 2 weeks.

Sprayed it all over him....concentrating on his rug area....then the next morning when I went to check him - he was covered in dead lice - hoorah!!

It was fairly cheap and defo did the job - thumbs up from me! I got mine from my local feed/tack store but you can order it off the net too

Give him a double dose of an Ivermectin based wormer. Ivermectin will also kill the lice and will be in the system to get any that hatch later.

Since I've used an Ivermectin based wormer I've had no trouble with lice at all - now nearly 20 years.

"Human" treatments work and are much cheaper. I've used Full Marks Solution (less than a fiver) and Derbac-M liquid (just under a tenner). Derbac-M also treats mange mites. Dosing with Ivermectin works too but I like to use a topical treatment as well. One bottle of either the above will do two treatments (do them a week apart if necessary but once is usually enough).
