Ex racer (the one that needs feeding up) has arrived, and surprise surprise, he's crawling with lice.

Have wormed with Ivermectin, and have a delousing shampoo ready to use if it warms up a bit today.

Are there any other things I can do?

You could sprinkle some lice powder all over him - that way he doesn't need a bath.
Did you give him a double dose of invermectin?

Yep, he's been double-dosed. He is absolutely manky from hoof to tail, hence buying the shampoo rather than the powder.
The good news is that the sun is blasting, and I'm off to the dentists leaving OH at home today to do the job.

Nice isn't it! I rescued 2 ponies which arrived with coats down to their knees and crawling with lice and where scatching on anything they could find the poor things! I bought some lice powder from country wide store (used to be midshire farmers) i think it was by barrier but might be wrong, i bought 2 huge tubs as thought it would take loads but i applied twice in a two week period, second just as a just incase and haven't had a scatch since!! You just put it on a line from ears all down the neck and back to the top of the tail, as the lice rotate aroung the horses body in a 24 hour period it will get them all on their way past, no need to cover them in it! and avoid rain!

Good luck

Horrible critters aren't they!! I have two really hairy ponies with lice at the moment.

Llwyncwn - how much frontline are you supposed to put on and where did you put it please? - I'm assuming you can't cover them in it as this would prove expensive.

I have been recommended to use Deosan fly repellant, and have covered them with this, but it's really hard to get down to the skin cos their coats are so long.

Well, you learn something new every day!!
I have previously covered horses all over with the stuff, doh!

Thank you so much - that's really helpful.

When they're infested, the only thing which has worked for me is Frontline (for dogs), even the vet recommended this

Of course - never thought of Frontline. I used it for legmites on a shire x we used to own, and it cured him in no time.
I presume you spray it down the mane and along the back?

I've got the same problem with this TB's coat - he is so poor and run down, that he's got a really woolly coat, and it's difficult to get right down to the skin.
If he wasn't so poor and needed the warmth, I'd have had him clipped...

I think I may have to resort to clipping too, trouble is they are my daughters ponies and one is tiny - 3'9" rugs and I've only got one lightweight turnout for her, want to avoid the expense of having to buy more really. Luckily though it is warming up nicely here now.

Anyway, good luck with yours, if I hear any top tips I'll let you know.
