A big thank you to the YO for letting me know-not-

My question is:

Is it worth treating my mare with Eqvalan ( am I correct in thinking it treats lice?) now as a precautionary measure?

Any ideas welcome, Thank You

I think my yearling has got lice as his neck has got scabby bits on it. Im going to de lice all of mine and their rugs this week just to be on the safe side mine aren't in with anyone elses hores but if they were I wouldn't not tell the owner! I dont know where he would have got lice from though?
Ive never had a horse with lice,

Haven't heard that Eqvalan treats lice, don't bother with louse powder as it desn't work - they're not allowed to put anything in it that actually works!

Vet says Coopers Spot On is effective though it's not licensed for horses. I've just treated mine with Coopers Fly Repellent Plus, £17 a bottle, there must be about 4-5 treatments in it and it does seem to have killed all the little horrors.

Don't know where they some from but they are pretty common, maybe they can lie and wait around on fences and bushes for a passing horse?!

Hello, don't panic just trot along to a good local tack shop and buy yourself some Coopers Fly Repellant Plus.

Comes in a bottle, with gloves and sponge for application.

Kills lice, mites, helps sooth itching, keeps flys away...great stuff, retails at around £25.00.

Lice power is crap, this stuff is brilliant, even the vets use it.

Deosect is good too. It's expensive initially (about £30 a tin) BUT you only need 10ml in 500ml of water so the 250ml tin lasts ages. It's also an excellent fly repellent.

Don't complain about lice though, a friend has lent me a NF yearling straight off the Forest to keep my pony company while his friend recuperates at another friend's stables following her accident. Terrific idea except that the straight-off-the-Forest yearling developed sarcoptic mange just after arriving! Great. . . . I'm now spending furtunes treating both ponies although mine is OK at the moment. However, it apparently takes 2-5 weeks for the itching and hairloss to start . . . .

Thanks

I used to use Deosect(?Deosan Fly Away) when I lived in England. I didn't realise it treated lice too ! I agree it's an excellent fly repellant and a little goes a long way, shame about the paint stripper smell though LOL Thanks again, most helpful

There are two kinds of lice and Ivermectin is effective in killing sucking kind, once treated treat again 10-14 days later to kill any new hatches.
