I have recently taken in a rescue pony to be rehabilitated. She was absolutely terrified when she arrived 10 days ago. The Rescue had been unable to get anywhere near her for 18 months. She has made amazing progress since coming here, taking carrots from my hand after 5 days but she is still very frightened. My problem is that I think she has lice and how the hell am I going to treat her without cornering her, terrifying her, and undoing all the good work over the past 10 days. So my question is, how long can I hold off treating her before it becomes a major problem? Only 2 very small patches next to her dock and a small patch between her eyes at the moment.

Can you get near enough to touch/stroke her? Or in the next couple of weeks? Coopers fly repellent plus is very good for getting rid of lice but does need wiping on with a sponge.

Can't get closer than 20 feet at the moment but I've isolated her from the others in her own small paddock which I will gradually make smaller (don't you love plastic posts and electric tape:-) ) over the next week and hope to be able to touch her within the next couple of weeks. She hasn't been back for carrots since the first time but she is getting calmer every day. I'm not willing to frighten her by trying to catch her, I am waiting for her to approach me. Thanks for the Coopers tip, probably less scary than powder.

I have looked for coopers for weeks and been told it is on longer available but every one has said TRI TEC 14 is just as good .
Well done for taking on a rescue you sound very caring.
