Hello everyone,

We all know as soon as the weather is finally turning to summer (woo!) all the horrible insects come out to play (boo!)

Today I noticed one of the ponies that I care for (a 12.3hh 7 year old Connemara mare) was infested in Lice! I had no sort of Lice treatment on me so I decided to wash her and the two other horses (a 20 year old Miniature Shetland mare and a 15.2hh 25 year old Cob mare) as I was concerned that they would be infested too :(

I now have Lice treatment on the way and will treat all the horses ASAP (as well as in two weeks time after the first treatment) but what I'm itching to know (hehe) is where did the lice come from?

The only change in routine the infested pony had was that she was ridden on a new hack and I was wondering if she could of picked up any Lice or Lice-Eggs on this hack and become infested?

All the horses are fit, healthy and cared for like princesses (despite being turned out all year), I just don't know what has brought this on! Is it purely the weather?

If anyone knows how they could of become infested please let me know so this doesn't happen again!

Many thanks!

No advice to offer where the lice may have originated from, but make sure you also treat any grooming kit, rugs for lice too or you will undo al your hard work. You've probably got plans to do it anyway, but just thought I'd say.

Hiya,

Yeah I have, brushes, rugs, saddle clothes, head collars, lead ropes, boots the whole lot! Its a complete nuisance!

Not sure what treatment you've got but coopers and deosect work well. I had 2 with lice this spring and 2 without! I treated them all just in case. The two that had it hadn't been anywhere, I think they were just prone to it, one a colt and the other a shaggy coat and didn't do well over winter (fed loads but didn't hold weight well)
Dont worry about it, treat them. Are they Unridden? Old or young? Thick coats? It'll help with summer coats coming through x

My little elderly welsh companion was infested with lice this January, we treated her first by bathing with hibi scrub, then fully clipped her out, then another bath with deosect. I started her on garlic granules and shes still on those. I don't know where thee lice come from, she was hardly going out and they came out of nowhere, strangely my mare that lives with her didn't get them.

Hiya,

Thanks I'll give it a try :) They are ages 7, 20 and 25, two are ridden and they're slowly shedding their winter coat (finally!)

Many thanks :) x
