LICE ??

About two weeks ago I discovered some lice when doing my boys mane, I ordered powder and spray and treated immediately, used the powder daily until it was finished which was about 5 days and continued using the spray, he seemed to be clear. I haven’t been up in 4 days and he’s been getting checked on by a friend. I started grooming today and he’s crawling with lice! I’ve brushed out as much as I can and sprayed him. He’s got such a thick coat and a very long thick mane so seems near impossible to get them all with the spray/ powder. I am going to phone the vet tomorrow and enquire about the injections I’ve read they can get? Has anybody used these and has it worked?

We used dermoline shampoo. That was a while ago though. It was a pain with a thick coat in the middle of winter so we had various hair dryers going! 2 baths 2(?) weeks apart.

Hes just a yearling, he does stand okay to get washed but gets a wee bit impatient so wouldn’t want to push it with him lol.
I would try and clip him if you can then treat with Deosect do a patch test though it's strong stuff one my horses reacts to it.

I have been on the fence about clipping him to try get in to treat proper them but as I say he’s just a yearling so really dunno how I’d get on trying to clip him just yet but could take them up and give it a go, he’s pretty laid back.

I'd just treat him with a pour on every fortnight until they are gone and not bother clipping. He'll shed his winter coat soon anyway then you'll see any stragglers more easily.

Fair enough I don't think I would want to clip a yearling! If his really woolly you could just do a small strip along the mane if that is where they mainly are.

You will need to treat all his companions as well. If you can still get it, Coopers Fly Repellent Plus is wonderful stuff.
Yeah there are just the two of them in the field and I have been doing both of them and cleaning all the brushes etc too. I’ll have a look, thank you!

Deosect doesn’t need the hair to be clipped, just sponge on (after a patch test) and it doesn’t even matter if you miss bits. I had a visiting pony with awful lice. I didn’t realise how bad until we used Deosect and saw how many dead ones came off her.

The vet injection will likely be dectomax - broad spectrum anti parasitic and very effective. A few months back I know there was a problem with supply, don't know if that is now resolved. May need 2 injections a few weeks apart.
It's tricky time of year for lice - horses still have thick coats and the weather is mild.
Ensure his general health is good, what you put into him matters as well as what goes on the outside.

The Spooky Pony gets them every spring, and in the past, he's had a Dectomax injection to clear them. @JunoJones is right: there was some sort of supply problem; our vet says they have it again, but it now only comes in big massive bottles, so they only carry doses in their cars if they think they will need them. This year, we're going the Deosect route, which I hate, because it smells awful, the pony doesn't like it, and I don't like sponging a reluctant horse in chilly weather. Ah well, hopefully it will work quickly.

Dectomax is very effective and I'd recommend if other things don't work but I'd go for the pour on first because the dectomax injections aren't very pleasant for a young pony.
