I’m itching just writing this!

Rising 2 year old on box rest has lice. I’ve doused him in powder as it’s the only thing I could get my hands on today, but it’s a repellent rather than an insecticide.

I’ll give my vet a bell tomorrow but in the wisdom of HHO is deosect the best thing to use? He has a coat like a wild Himalayan yak in the depth of winter. Am I going to need to clip him out to get rid of his little pets or will insecticide penetrate?

SpotOn was always my go to regardless of coat length but you can't get this anymore. Hopefully your vet will have something. I find the powder works OK but you need 2 or 3 rounds of it over a week or so.

Deosect will kill the little blighters. You will need two or three treatments each a couple of weeks apart to be sure. You shouldn't need to clip if you don't want because the coat will cast soon hopefully.
That’s good to hear. I did clip a little air hole in his chest yesterday which was his first experience of clippers (barring patchwork quilt effect the vets gave him under sedation) but a full clip of the little yeti might tax me and my clippers!

I would clip if his coat is really long he will probably be more comfortable it's going to be so warm next week.
I’m definitely torn on this, the forecast is for hot in the day and near freezing at night, his little pen is pretty shaded. I think I’ll have to play it by ear.

I suppose you don't really want to be rugging him I did a small bib clip on Arabi when he was on box rest a few months ago as he was getting warm as it was so mild, the most I put on him was a fleece at night on the few occasions it dropped right down.

You might get away with just taking a bit off without rugging.

I've just today done my second stint with Deosect. Fizz is about as hairy as anything and he started scratching and on further inspection discovered he was louse. I've clipped him out, he looks a bugger and deosected him and all the others. It seems to have sorted it. Bizarrely none of the others have any sign of them.

I had to clip out the cob I got a few years back that turned up with friends - hogged mane, feathers off too. (she looked like a dairy cow for ages......)

Deosect just couldn't get through that coat.

Good luck....

First of all don't panic as fast as they arrive they will disappear ! Just remember to retreat. Louse powder works a treat as does deosect. I once had them on my Shetland first year I owned her. I clipped her out and treated. I honestly had never seen them before so its was a bit of a shock when you find them. Any way the illegals visitors did not last very long !

Thanks folks. The lice are definitely a bit sleepier having been doused in powder but I think I will aim to deosect as well. He’s had a little clip today because of the temperatures and was such a good lad, let me do him on my own without any bother. It’s not enough to deal with the lice but hopefully he will be a bit more comfortable.
