Licking rusty metal?

My mare likes to lick rusty things just wondering is there a reason behind her madness?

Not sure about horses, but in calves it's to do with lacking Iron - it was very common in veal calves years ago.

My sister's tb likes sucking on the metal gate where he is occasionally tied up - he is just weird tho and will suck on rugs left over his door. I could understand this when he was a baby but he's almost 7 now!

yeah she licks her door hinge and the one out on the wash area too. I thought perhaps lacking iron too.
