Hi,

I know there have been many posts about how effective Carl Hester's reins can be for helping to establish a contact, but once the horse is working well in them, is it easy to maintain such a contact with 'ordinary' reins or does the horse and rider need to re-learn the feel?

Thanks

you see, this is my problem with them, imho they don't teach the rider or the horse how to establish a nice elastic contact together, they are a 'cheat' and surely once you take them away, you still have the same problem you had before, although i guess one could say that at least you both have a good idea now of what you are feeling for!
i'd say go back to keeping shoulders, elbows and wrists as elastic as possible, to try to mimic what the reins did.

My horse tends to lean on the right rein and I over compensate and start to hang on to that rein. I use this type of rein on occasional times only for maybe 2 or 3 days and then revert back to normal reins. It gives us both a break and does make quite a difference. I would never use them continuously as I don't think that would be a helpful training aid.
