Taking my youngster in hand showing for the first time.

I shall wear black trousers (he has white legs)
grey tweed
shirt
tie
black boots
black hat
black gloves
*note the black theme

He shall wear
brown in hand bridle (need to buy one... Will we get shot down if he wears a normal bridle?)
brown leather lead

So the dilemma is .... What colour show cane?!?
Should it be black to match me? Or brown to match him?
Or should I got for black instead of brown ?

Big decision!

Ideally the cane and gloves should be brown but you can get away with more in a general youngstock class than a M&M youngstock class for example which is why i asked

Again the bridle will be more appropriate depending on the class, age and type of horse, it would be normal to show a hunter in a Riding bridle than it would a section B for example

If using a riding bridle use a bit appropriate to the age and type of horse and have the reins over the head - a riding bridle with a coupler and lead is seen as amateurish i understand

Thank you! That's really helpful! Ill probably show him in a riding bridle with a plain flat cavesson noseband then as I will show him in hunter classes in future.

Yes if a hunter then riding bridle with reins over his head

Check on the crop, a hunting style whip or bamboo cane may be correct over a stick but im not sure

So just to clarify, even though its a youngstock class it *should* be ok to show him in a black hunter riding bridle with loose ring snaffle, reins over his head and a bamboo show cane? (hes rising 3)

I could enter him in the coloured class, but seen as its his first pony party, id rather just do youngstock as its more acceptable for him to fidget. Tbh, i dont care if we come last as its all experience, but id rather look like i *sort of* know what im doing :D
(all the gear no idea when it comes to showing!)

I'd do both the classes, it's all experience!

Your bridle and everything sounds fine :)

I'm very tempted! But the coloured class is first. My plan was to do the youngstock, and if all went well, enter the coloured. But the order of classes means the coloured is first :(

Brown!! :) I'd have an inhand bridle for a youngster personally, I don't show mine in riding bridles in hand until they're of age to be ridden at a show (so 4 basically!) Hope you have fun! Make sure you carry some treats in your pocket! :D

I done both of them when my boy was 3years old. I can't remember which class came first but it was a local show. Just get there in time and let them have a look about. The judge will ask age and may take into consideration.

My boy is piebald and he's always had black tack. He's 11 now and we still show, however I wear a brown tweed and brown gloves with brown cane. Brown is more correct for showing but on a piebald it just doesn't sit with me!

It's only very basic local level. Really friendly supportive venue so in not overly worried. I just don't want to spend loads on kit if it is just potentially one outing as a youngster . (He's 3 in December) and we don't have transport so only walk across to this venue when something is on. Which after this show, probably won't be held again until he's 3 . Fingers crossed it all goes to plan :)
