I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences/or has known anyone with any experience of this.
If so, could you please give me an idea of how it was handled, length of time, the end result etc.

Thanks in advance.

my horse has done that. in both hinds, but worse in his left hind. he went lame May 2006, had 3 months field rest and bute, then shockwave and cartrophen jabs, sound for a day, then lame again, more rest and bute, but getting worse, so had both legs operated on last August. box rest and 8 wks in-hand walking, then ridden walking for 2 monmths then trotting and cantering - stayed sound until March this year then came in from field hopping lame again. 8wks pen rest and bute then another 4months field rest - still 1/10 lame - at 21 yrs old i think i have now come to the conclusion he is destined for permanent retirement.

Ah. Not the news I was hoping to hear.
Thank you for your thorough and valuable input though.
I hope your boy enjoys his retirement.

there is a horse same yard as Dan who has damaged both of her back ones - had an op on one when she damaged that one, came sound for a few years then damaged the other one - no op this time and lameness has caused problems with front feet as well so now having a year off.

horse at my last yard had been operated on yrs and yrs ago - he was retired but had apparantly carried on working for many yrs after the op.

there is another one on Saddle-Up who had the op same time as my boy last year who is still sound and back doing fun rides etc.

My mare has had operationson both hind leg A/Ls - So far *touches wood* it's been a success - she came 100% sound on her right leg before being operated on her left hind - now we're just working her through with rehab aftercare which includes hard work/stretching and making sure she's working correctly - It's been about 4 months now and all is well - I would recommend surgery.
