A horse belonging to a friend of mine fell over in the field recently and severely damaged the ligaments around the stifle. It had surgery to remove the damaged ligaments and she has been told it is unlikely the horse will ever be ridden again (it's 5 and she had done everything from showjumping & ODEs to hunting every week last winter), and that it will be a ong road to rehabilitation and recovery.

Does anyone have experience of this?

My boy damaged ligaments and cartilage in his stifle 4 years ago now.
He wasnt operated on as didnt like the mortality under general anaesthesia (he is 20 now)
He was retired, but didnt take to it so was gradually brought back into light hacking - Cant school as cant cope with the circles.
The insurance claims had prognosis as guarded and poor.
He now is capable of hacking and will let me know how much he can do. He does no more jumping, and isnt asked to do anything, but is generally enjoying life and 2-3 hacks a week including a gallop on the beach!

Thanks for your replies.

It jumped out the stable a couple of days ago, so has to be kept on a small paddock as it won't stay in for box rest.
