I understand that there is some overlap of the lightest lightweight cobs and small hunters. Would I be correct in thinking that Duke would do better as a small hunter than a cob?
I'll need to grow his mane out for next season if so, so planning ahead ?

He's 14.3hh but only 4yo and still growing.

Thank you!

How about grow his mane out in case, see how he develops over the winter and then look at going to Showing Register clinic or another showing clinic (if such things happen again) in the early part of the year to get professional feedback. Easy to hog the mane in the spring than try to regrow it then. I don't know enough about cobs or small hunters to advise but he looks very nice. In affiliated classes most horses are generally pretty close to height limit but he does as you say have some growing to do.

He would look small at the moment in a LW cob class, but he may grow enough to fit in. They tend to be right up to the height limit.
Small hunters are quite fine these days; that seems to be the fashion. At the moment your lovely chap sits in the void between the two classes, I would say.

I agree with Humblepie. Grow the mane, try to get in some clinics over winter/early spring and then hog if need be.
