I was thinking of getting a Likit Boredom Breaker or Snack A Ball for Castle, do any of you guys have them in your horses stable? Does it keep them entertained or do they get bored with it within 5 minutes? All opinions appreciated

We have a decahedron for Daisy and she really enjoys kicking it round the stable. it seems to depend on the horses character, some ignore them but we thought that Daisy might take to it because before we bought it she was kicking her feed bucket around the stable and she is quite energetic.

If castle is food orientated I would say try one

Not a boredom breaker but shadow has a likit holder - can't hang it too close to the wall though or she eats it too quickly!!
She also has an equine decahedron which it similar to the snack a ball and she loves it!!!!

I think it depends on the horse though - some don't like/understand them or get bored after 5 mins!

My boy has both a likit holder and a snack ball thingie. I cant leave his ball in with him over night however, as he gets quite violent with it once it stops dropping food (he attacks it)

He loves the lickits and can be prone to getting through them quickly. He's not fussed about some of the funkier flavours they come in though.

We have a dodechadron which the horeys love, the thing is it makes quite a bit of noise, someone i knew has one and the YO had to take it off the horse as it was keeping her awake by bashing it round the stable the most of the night, otherwise they are great

Mine have the likit holders, but they are tied to the gate in an american barn stable, so my horses do munch through them.

Definitely keeps them interested, but I have to steer clear of mint ones as they don't last a night!

I use Snack-a-balls for my two horses, but can't fill them too much as obviously it's food, and they would get fat to have them ad lib! I put D&H pasture nuts in them.

I have used Likits in the past, but they are so soft that the horses just finish them in minutes, make a hell of a mess, and I don't like the idea of all that sugar intake. In the summer they attract flies.

I believe they have to make them soft, as years ago, some horses were known to die from getting large chunks of hard licks stuck. Someone on my yard had experience of this.

Sparks had a Decahedron for Christmas last year, but ignored it (for 2 weeks)!!! Have given it to her field mate (who started playing with it immediately) and now he keeps the whole yard awake, by batting it round his stable!!! He also has a Tounge Twister.

I use one for my mare - she is quite choosy about her flavours though, won't touch a couple of them but INHALES the raspberry & vanilla one (which I must admit to trying myself - verrrry yummy

). She can eat them quite quickly but a whole Likit has got the sugar equivalent of about 2 hours worth of spring grass so I it doesn't bother me - I wouldn't want her to eat that every day maybe, but a couple of times a week seems fine.

I do also use the snak-a-ball, I tend to put some of her dinner in there so she's not getting additional food - it makes a hell of a racket though because they smash it up against the walls!

I might consider getting a decahedron as well, some of your horses seem to like them

Castle will probably make a racket with it as well, but as long it keeps him occupied that's what matters most!

I have the tongue twister which last a day or two depending on the flavor.

Also have snack balls with cubes which they love. I hang up on strings the largest swedes I can find to keep them occupied.

Yes i found that too, i had to take it out for the summer, but she doesn't really need it in the summer anyway because she's only in during the day.

Never had lickits (not overly keen on her having so much sugar), but I do give her a snackball full of high fibre cubes and Spring loves it, although not all horses understand how to use them!

Out of interest - the people who's horses eat the lickits quick - how many actually hung them so they couldn't be pressed against something and chewed?

I hang mine on a gate, as I am not so keen on going up a ladder to fix onto the barn roof - so I accept mine are going to eat them quick.

I just wondered how long they last when you hang them correctly?

I have a ball which I fill with nuts daily, he loves it
smile.gif
Also he loves his plain salt lick but would not touch a lick-it thingy

I got him a mint one and coz he is 'lickilitious' ( will lick anything, hands, arms, face!) I thought he would love it , but NO he didn't touch it! He too likes a swede! ( when I remember to get him one)

I bought the smaller cheaper version think it's a manger mate or something. Millie's had it over a year and in that time took a few chunks out of it so I'd say she got bored with it and now considers it to be 'part of the fixtures'. She does have the field lick thing tho that comes in a blue tub and she has a go at that quite regularly. I also leave that in her stable.

I hung mine from the middle of the roof in desparation coz merlin can eat one in minutes. But he just tilts his head and opens his cavernous gob really wide and manoeuvers his jaws till they are each side of the likit and then.......CHOMP......off it falls, and there it is gone.

All you need is a horse with a big mouth and half a brain and you have had it!!!

I have both for my boy. He loves the lick-it's but they don't last long with him. I put a swede on his boredom breaker and he loves that.
grin.gif

He is crafty with his snack ball, it is the smooth spherical type and he got the idea pretty fast that if he puts it against the bottom of the door he just has to roll it backwards and forwards to get the food!

Don't think I'll be getting the likits, they seem to go very quickly, and with Castle being a little pig I think it'll turn out quite costly in the end!

I'm definitely considering getting a snack ball/decahedron

I have the hanging licks and the tongue twister. The horses absolutely go nuts over the licks (especially banana and cherry ones). With the tongue twister - I find it HELL to get the stupid licks into (and out of) the holder. In fact my tongue twister isnt used anymore because I gave up...... anybody want to buy it off me?!

The hanging likits (just the ones in the simple holder on a rope), I hang from a rafter in a corner. Its all well and good saying not to hang it near anywhere they can bang it or shove against a wall to eat, but once you bang your head on it loads of times you'll soon move it to somewhere more out of the way!! TBH my likits dont last long. 1 horse in particular will play with it all night until its gone. So they last maybe a night, 2 days max!
