Hi,
my 3 year old threw a splint when he was kicked in the field a few months back, hes not lame and never has been on it, its on his back leg and not that noticeable but because i know its there id rather it not be :/
A lady at a tack shop near me suggested i feed limestone flour to him to get rid of it, will this actually help? if not what will? He has one feed a day and it is quite a big feed. I dont want anything that will blister the splint thanks x

Have you had a forage analysis which has told you you're deficient in calcium? If not, don't feed extra.

I can't get my head around people advising to randomly feed extra minerals, with no regard for a balanced diet, or the possible health implications of mineral imbalances.

But then the same is true of feeding commercial balancers, so I guess I'm in the minority.

Unusual advice from the tack room lady.

If your feilds / forage are deficient in calcium - or if you feed bran regulalrly, then limestone flour can replace that. As in fact can any source of calcium like sugar beet. But it won't get rid of a splint.

A splint is a bony overgrowth resulting from injury - they do sometimes reduce with time in young horses. But otherwise - like any scar -it is there for life I'm afraid.

But...but...but...have you read what it says on the side of the bag??:D:D:D

Sorry, had to laugh at this.

Another one with the minority. But I wonder if they cause much harm? A pair of normally functioning kidneys will syphon off the surpluses in just the same way the tack shop lady and supplement manufacturers are syphoning off the extra cash the ignorant and stupid have to spend. Everyone has to make a living!;)
