Hi. I was just wondering if anyone here used Limestone flour when making their feeds up. Only i have been given a drum of it and was wondering about using it and the quantities to use and the benefits.
I have used it, it helps to grow strong bones, no need to use a lot, in fact do not overdose or you may upset the CA:Mg balance.
One Kg should last 50 days, so one day supply is 20gms, a small scoop per 500Kg horse.
I would be a bit wary of using a single mineral without knowing the overall balance in the diet.
I feed it where I am based on mineral profile of the forage I feed however where I was before calcium levels were off the scale and it wouldn't have done any good to feed it.
Yes you are correct Criso, some parts of the country are on limestone, so the horse will get plenty of Ca in his diet already.
I assumed he was feeding straights and already used a broad range supplement
There is no real evidence that the Ca in limestone can be metabolised by the horses gut. It is more than likely just to pass straight through . probably It is more likely to be of benefit thrown on your fields.
For calcium to be taken up you need to ensure the potassium balance is correct . That why Alfa A is actually one of the best ways to ensure this.
Thank you. I have two horses, one a 13year old Welsh D mare and the other a 15year old British Hanoverain mare, so it sounds like i would be better off spreading the stuff around my fields so that it soaks into the ground?
