Liming pasture

As I have loads of buttercups i have been advised that liming the ground will help, does anyone have idea of ratio and how long it must be left please?

It will only help if your pH is low, if your pH is 6 you may need about a tonne to the acre, if your pH is less obviously you will need more. Ideally a shower of rain is useful to wash it in before grazing.

Lime hasn't made the slightest difference to buttercups in my pature, nor the moss. But it is always a good idea to get the Ph checked. Sean Smith did mine (late summer, you need rain to wash it off the leaves before you can put stock back on) and covers most of the UK - that is all he does so he knows the job. He will come and do on the spot testing then tell you how much lime you need to get it back to neutral. And yes, he did tell a freind of mine she didn't need any. 01629 581279 - he is based in Staffs but covers a huge part of the country.

Most ag. Merchants will have someone who will pH test.

We used thrust weed killer last year to get rid of buttercups and it seems to have worked as we have a lot less this year.

Unfortunately, my buttercups haven't read the book either and seem to thrive on lime.

I think you need to spray before the flowers emerge or they simply re-establish from the seeds.

We sprayed a week ago with a mix of agritox and depitox - before buttercups had flowered (which I believe is key) and they are looking very unhappy
Our Ph is 7 so lime wouldn't have made any difference

I think there are three (or more) different kinds of buttercup so might be worth finding out which yours is so you can get the right stuff to treat it.

Seems this is a bit of a difficult problem.. have not been able to spray at all this year as either too windy or raining or rain on the way!

Will look into Thrust, not one I have heard of, usually use depitox but it only kills top foliage and they just grew back What I have done a lot of though is topping them so seeds dont spread and will tackle again with weedkiller when weather etc is right!
