Whacked my head 4 weeks ago when racehorse i was riding fell and although i hit my head i had no broken bones and wasn't bleeding so was sent home. Pretty badly concussed for a couple of days but have to ride so saw the osteopath and got on with it.
Since then my balance has been weird when riding., in struggling to sit up and into the saddle and have since hit the dirt twice this week from the same horse.
Horse is particularly fresh but really shouldn't have come off, feel a bit rubbish now, usually get paid to ride the naughty ones not fall off my own.
Any tips for balance building? Or could it still be linked to the concussion (speech went a bit odd etc). Fed up of being useless :-(

Thanks, i would but last time i hit my head (pheasant, rein snapped and headbutting a fence sort) and went a few days later with a bad headache they had a big go at me for wasting time and told me to take paracetemol plus preferably avoid horses forever ! Put me off a bit.

I'd also recommend seeing your GP.

I do know someone who fell and banged her head. She had the same symptoms as you and was told it could last for upto four months. Thankfully it only lasted a month.

I too think its worth a trip to the GP.
The last time I was concussed the symptoms did not start till the next day and lasted two months .
They where a general feeling of oddness poor balance and falling down once when I looked a white sheet I was hanging on the line in the sunshine.

I would definitely far checked out. I received a bad concussion when I fell off almost 20 years ago (was riding with no hat) and it left me with ongoing balance and proprioception problems that have only got worse as ive got older :/

I fell from my horse about a year ago, landing on my head, onto concrete. Symptoms - really really bad headache, vision blurred, no balance, emotional, tired, speech odd.

I was taken to hospital three days after the accident and was diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome. Suffered for about 9 months - I was given medication for the balance and spent a number of days in hospital. I had lots of MRI and CT scans to confirm no bleed and was told to rest and do nothing.

Do go to the GP and get checked. They can help and whilst I am no doctor your symptoms do sound similar. Take care.

To be honest, call your OOH now - ask the receptionist first thing to speak to a Dr (be very assertive) they may send you straight to hospital to get properly checked out rather than going to see GP to get referred to a consultant.

Speech and balance are quite major symptoms of brain damage.

My daughter took a fall last weekend, she seemed fine at the time and carried on riding, but next day she had a terrible headache, felt sick, was emotional, couldn't concentrate so her work sent her to A&E, I went with her, we sat there for 3.5 hours and they told her to take a paracetamol and if symptoms persisted after a week then go back in and see them.

She says she feels very tired all the time since it happened, she went to the GP on Thursday and they again have dismissed her. I would say if you're still suffering symptoms, particularly with your speech and balance, as long as you have been go back and get some help, heads are too precious to take chances with!

Thanks, got a new hat immediately so sorted on that front. Think I will try for an appointment with the GP. I was slightly taken aback last time with their abruptness as was trying to be sensible. Ho him, teach me to fall off last lot before the Grand National! My mum checked me every hour for the two nights after to check I was breathing. Just hate feeling useless, normally I'm the opposite.
