If you would be so kind to tell me about your livery yards, pretty please.

1) what type of livery are you on (DIY, Part etc)?

2) how much do you pay per week?

3) what EXACTLY is included in price?

4) how much do you pay for extras?

5) how much do you/would you be prepared to pay for your horse to be exercised (not schooled, just lunged/hacked/ridden around kind of thing)?

6) How big is the yard? How many stables/horses and how many acres of grazing (roughly)?

7) name 3 things you like about your yard most (don't say people though
wink.gif
)?

8) name 3 things you like least about it?

9) and finally, if you could have anything... what would be 3 things you would be delighted to see added to your yard? (can be facility or service)

ETS 10) whereabouts is the yard? (nearest town, please)

Ta muchly, have some sweeties and a drink on me

Ok i am north notts ( newark ish! ) ......
1- Complete DIY no option for part or full or assisted
2- I pay £88.00 per calender month ( by standing order)
3- I get stabling, good quality grazing farmer does fencing maintanance ( all permanent electric fencing) however we have to do our own ragwart picking, trough cleaning. We also get Hayledge provided from when horses come in overnight ( nov ish ) till they go out 24/7 ( was mid may this year). Bedding is bought in bulk by YO and we can either buy our own or buy from them ( YO Bedmax at £5.50 per bale)
4- No option for extras from YO have to sort it out amongst ourselves.
5- If i was going on holiday i would be happy to pay someone to lunge a couple of times in the week to keep her ticking over i am completely out of touch but would pay £5 - £7 i suppose?
6- We have 13 horses so 13 stables and in total as a very rough estimate about 25 - 30 acres of grazing ( more than enough we always have too much grass despite the land being terrible as it is clay!)
7- I love the hacking as it is a working farm we have loads of off road hacking, I love the school 20/40 rubber and the fact i hardly ever have to share it with anyone, I love the fact it is really secure ( someone on site 24/7, electric gates, cctv on gates) and i can come and go at anytime as i please.
8- I hate the inflexability ( no option for small pens in fields if you need less grass, we just have to bring in), The fact it is every man to themselves if you are late in winter and havent made plans ( or some one hasnt taken pity on the horse) horses are left out by themselves. The fact we sometimes have to keep in for a few days in winter ( although it is only ever a few days it is the only other negative i can think of!) because of the clay soil and if it rains consistantly we get really wet and muddy fields.
9- Would love there to be someone trustworthy happy to do services ( mucking out, bringing in, turning out, ) for a payment, would love a horsewalker, and would love a x country course!

We are nearish to Newark!
Sorry for the essay hope that helps

These are the details of the livery yard i used before I rented my own field.

1) DIY

2) £28 per week in winter, £20 per week in summer. Winter rate dependant on size of horse

3) Individual turnout. 24/7 from April to October/November. Daily turnout during winter. During winter rates include all hay and straw (unlimited). Shared tack/feed room.

4) £2 for turnout/bring in

5) Wouldn't be interested, like to do it all myself because I am a control freak!

6) Stabling for 8/9 horses/ponies, 7 paddocks, approx 8 acres.

7) YO doesn't get involved unless necessary. No children on yard, youngest is late twenties, rest over 40. Secure.

8) No school. No toilet! No individual tack/feed rooms

9) The three things above, plus be a bit cheaper - personally think its a bit pricey considering lack of facilities.

10) Retford

Well I'm on the edge of where you are looking but anyway...

DIY
£108 per month for stable, use of school (20x40 rubber and sand and floodlit) and individual turnout - year round no restrictions and YO happy to shorten etc according to horses needs, can stay out 24/7 for as long as you like.

Supplies hay (inc in livery) but can have any bedding you like with dry storage in old grain store, good quality hay for £2 a bale, good well managed pasture with good fencing nor ragwort etc Also have a jumping paddock with full set of show jumps and small x country course - we can build more/bigger when we like!! - hacking is great - lots of bridleways but also have TROT toll route which gives us another 15 miles of off road hacking.

There are 12 stables for horses, 4 others that are on grass livery (with field shelter) and a pony paddock with 3 ponies whoi have their own field shelter!

Is just the right size, is always full - YO has waiting list but vacancies only happen when a horse goes - newest livery has been here about 3 years. Would be perfect if there was an indoor school - but we are really lucky and have everything!!

YO will do extras - ie turnout, change rugs, feed for 50p an item, mucking out or poopicking is £1.50. Can have any farrier, vet, RI etc you want. Paying someone to excercise (hacking etc not schooling) is £10 an hour from one of the various free lancers around here - there is a freelance groom on our yard who we all know how would do it for a £8 for any of us if we needed it. We also have an annual yard show and there is another yard in the village that runs dressage and show jumping competitions that we can hack to. There is no extra charge for lorries, trailers etc

Hope it helps - when is the big move??

Thanks, Slinky.
Please don't mention the word 'move' to me!!! My stables are being built, my fencing will be done in about 2 weeks, my walker arrives sometime in September (I think), my hay is being cut as we speak:)
I have to move, at least partially before end of July as my cows' TB test is running out and I ain't paying for another one!
Everything takes forever, nothing is straightforward and I'm knackered and skint!

Well I used to live in Notts, stayed at two yards whilst there;

Yard one, £44 a week in winter and £28 in summer for DIY though this included all straw bedding and all hay (shavings or haylage were extra). Alos included one turn out or bring in monday to friday. I never had any extras so can't tell you but I know they also did part livery and full livery (which was everything bar exercise for £70 a week). I would pay up to £10-15 for exercising (eg an hours hack or schooling, but I am very tight and would do it all myself anyway!) The yard was reasonably big, about 30 stables and set on a dairy farm so they had loads of acres, maybe 15 with horses on? (I am not very good with acreage!) Plus loads more for the cows and growing hay and straw on.

I really liked this yard, it had lots of facilities but i suppose my favourites were that there was an indoor school (very handy when raining), a big outdoor school, (well 25 by 50 ish which is bigger than most), lots of showjumps and also quite good hacking (though you did have to go on roads to get there) (sorry that's four!).

Wasn't much I didn't like, I guess muddy gateways, one of my stables leaked quite badly for awhile (which was extremely annoying as my bed kept getting flooded). I suppose a third would be my feild was quite a long trek uphill but generally I was pleased with the yard.

Things to add! Well it had most things already so it would be even better hacking (ie pick up sherwood forest and replant it next to the yard!). That's about it actually, it was a very nice yard! (This one was near Newark).

Right second yard, this one was near Mansfield (sorry this is turning into a very long reply!) £30 a week DIY livery only includes stable and field, had to buy own hay and bedding off yard owner who liked to charge over the top rates. Initially this place had no school though eventually they built one after saying they would for years and never doing it! It had quite good hacking and you could get to sherwood forest from there though it took about 45mins to get there so the on the doorstep hacking wasn't anything special. About 20 horses on 10 acres of land that wasn't very well maintained, hardly any grass and full of ragwort. Extras were available, charged for a few pounds each depending on what it was, ie £1.50 for turnout/bring in, £2 poo pick per barrow, £3.50 muck out etc. Exercise there was £12.50 for half hour or £15 for 45mins.

I liked about the yard, quite good hacking and you didn't have to do roadwork, also the nearness to sherwood forest so if you wanted to go for a long hack you could, the stables were nice, well built breezeblock ones and everyone had their own lockable storage bit at the front. Can't think of a third reason.

Things I disliked, the general lack of maintenance or care for the yard/horses welfare, as mentioned there was ragwort everywhere (YO didn't give a toss), also litter and (!)open wells in the fields. Yard owner was always trying to scrape every last penny out of people and making promises he had no intention of keeping. And the main thing I disliked about that yard, the yard owner himself, the most arrogant and lazy t*sser I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

Things to add to the yard, a school! (It got one eventually but only after months of nagging). Jumps (again these eventually came). And a yard owner who actually cared about the place rather than just wanting to line his pockets. There you go, sorry this is long and a bit bitchy! (Can you tell I am bitter?!)

1) what type of livery are you on (DIY, Part etc)?

3) what EXACTLY is included in price?
Summer: horse in during day, so she is brought in in the morning and fed, buckets cleaned. Fields are poo picked daily, and yard is swept etc
Winter: Horse in at night, so fed and turned out in the morning, then mucked out, waters emptied and buckets cleaned. Fields poo picked daily, yard swept and tidied etc
4) how much do you pay for extras?
£3.50 going up to £4 for 1 day of full livery, which is obviously everything included.
5) how much do you/would you be prepared to pay for your horse to be exercised (not schooled, just lunged/hacked/ridden around kind of thing)?
At ours it is £12 with one instructor, and I think £18-20 with another... but I don't use this.

Sorry, but the people- so lovely.
Instructor- fab and reasonable priced.
Service- yard manager/groom is fab, beds are pristine and she is great with the horses
School is nice, and we have jumps
Fields are close by

8) name 3 things you like least about it?
Price in summer.... but it evens out in winter.
Price of hay
Would be better if we had more grazing, but it's managed well.

9) and finally, if you could have anything... what would be 3 things you would be delighted to see added to your yard? (can be facility or service)
tack room
cheaper hay/bedding
