How much micro linseed would u use for weight gain? I'm feeding 2 mugs a day at present, 1 in each meal. Also for coat shine my others get a mug once a day, does that sound right? Who feeds it all year round? Or just winter?

My ex racer gets 1 and a half equijewel cups (much bigger than a mug) twice a day and looks brilliant. She lost a little weight when I upped her work load so I went from 1 cup twice a day to 1 and a half and it seems to have done the trick. She was never skinny though. It gets mixed with chaff and a little sugar beet.

Mine gets half a cup but is a v good doer. She will be off it as soon as the grass comes through as that has the omegas in it anyway and she wont need the extra cals then .

Tis all v dependent on the individual horse and its workload/ t.o etc

I have only ever fed two large splashes of oil a day and my boy shines immediately, I didnt realise you could get it any other way than oil form? This may help to put some more weight on him (currently on 3 feeds a day of 1 barley rings, 1 alfa a, 1 build up cubes - all stubbs scoop) he eats an 8kg haylage net a night and still struggles to gain weight... can you let me know prices and brand for the micro linseed please? ;-)

I used Charnwood milling micro linseed ( high fat) google it.
My lad had a problem putting on weight and after contacting baileys I found out I was feeding to much in one meal, so was going stright out the other end without doing it's job inside. So a complete waste off money. The horses stomach is only the size off a rugby ball and can only take around 4lb at a time ( 1 stubb scoop) hay and fibre are ok as they are digested in the hind gut but starch base feeds must be digested in the stomach to take full effect. Hope that makes sense? I found it really usefull and tbh iv cut his feeds down and up the linseed and iv seen no difference so I'm saving a lot on feed.

Another option is Gravenhorse Feeds (http://www.gravenhorse.co.uk/Linseed_Meal.htm) who can deliver for less than Charnwood charge if you live Beds/Herts/Bucks & parts of adjoining counties. If you don't - Charnwood is a tad cheaper incl delivery :)

Sorry to high jack the thread but do you know if micronised linsead is o.k to feed to a horse who is supposed to be on a low oil and protein diet?

My mare had some elevated liver enzymes so I've been advised to keep her feed low on oil and protein and feed little and often to help her liver out but she could do with a little bit more weight on her.

Thanks.

No, definitely not since full fat linseed meal is high in both. Typical analysis: Crude Protein 23%; Oil 35% Digestible Energy (horse) 20MJ/kg. I'd definitely avoid feeding it to your mare.

I believe beet pulp is okay to feed a horse suffering liver damage. Are you feeding this ATM? If not, this is helpful to maintain and put on weight. There's an interesting article on liver damage and equine nutrition here http://www.ker.com/library/health/2010/06/nutritional-support-of-horses-with-liver-disease.html :)

Edited to add: my mare had liver damage last year and our vet recommended Equistro Haemolytan 400. It seemed to help and her bloods were improved a couple of months later.

Thanks spyda and Ex racer - better give it a miss. She's already on lots of speedi beeet, top spec and hi fi lite which was given the approval by the Dodson and Horrel nutritionist. Think I will ask them again. Will also try the top spec peeps but they always seem to recommend thier own products!
Last liver test was all clear but still keep to the low oil diet in case.
Thanks again.
