Ok, I want to feed Beanie bolied linseed this winter. Can I or have any of you used a slow cooker to do this and if so, what timing, amounts etc do you follow. Also barley. It is such an excellent way to feed in the colder months, plus it smells just gorgeous!!!

HI there we feed boiled barley with linseed all year round. In winter we pop it in the bottem of the aga over night but in summer when the aga is off we do use a slow cooker, we just whack in the barley and linseed covered with about 2-3inches of water and leave it for 5-6 hours (we have a timer plug on it) works a treat and the horses love it!

Yes you can defo do linseed in the slow cooker I did when I worked for a master. In an average size slow cooker I put 2 heaped mugs full in filled the slow cooker up with boiling water and put it on low all night it was ready for the next day. This is how I did it with no problems. The above was eough for 4 horses, in 1 feed each.

I was also planning on doing the same but wasn't sure on the quantities, can anyone suggest how much? I've read in a book you should not feed more than 113g-226g (1/4-1/2lb) of dry linseed twice a week as they can't absorb more than this?

Also can you cook it on the stove? I make a linseed jelly to add in my own breakfast sometimes and just soak this the night before in a glass of water, can I then just cook this for less time?

One more daft Q....should it just be mixed into a normal feed, all my old dusty books talk about bran mash...but I don't want to feed bran.

Sorry Cougar for hijacking!!!

I used to do cooking linseed till I forgot it and left it on overnight, I dont think I ever got the horrible smell out of my house!!

Since then I just buy some instant linseed from simple systems Its amazing stuff and is 0 effort at all and it works just as well if not better as you can give them a tiny bit each day. You either just add it too feed and damp feed or you can turn it into jelly buy adding water just to it by itself.

I would never make it myself again!!
