Hi all ive had my new horse now for a few months when he came to me he was very skinny hinds sticking out ribs showing he has now put abit of weight on i can still see his ribs but you can now see a big gut underneath his hinds are slowly coming on but i dont think what im feeding is working completely right for him as he shold of put more weight on buy now, so question is Linseed oil or micronised linseed? Ive never fed any myself so am novice to feeding this, which is better im wanting it for weight gain rather than shiny coat, i no you never want a horse to put weight very quick but how soon will i start to see results & how much shall i feed? ive heard of one which is seeds which need to be grinded up i cant do this so if this is one of them please let me know,
shire x, age 25, out of work, currently stabled, lots hay

thanks in advance

just read of someone elses post linseed sent there horse loopy, im not good around horses that are loopy so i really hope this is not the case hes a quite chap

my youngster was on showing pencils a few yrs ago when he needed weight gain not sure with older horses

If you want to put weight on your horse his daily intake of calories needs to be in excess of what he actually needs. This means that unless your horse is an absolute saint he may become quite fresh till he gains the weight and you can cut him back to a maintenance diet.

On the other hand some horses are sensitive to some feeds as well.

Is your diet carefully balanced? Have you spoken to a nutritionist? Sometimes something as simple as checking the balance of your diet is all you need to make the most of what you feed and they gain weight.

give saracens a ring - we spoke to them down at Royal International and they were brill! The equijewel really bulked friends traditional up!

Our old ponies all have micronised linseed in their diet.
From your description of your horse I would have him tested for Cushings if he hasn't already been tested recently. Are his teeth in good condition?
