Hi all :) My mares coat looks a bit "bla" at the moment, you no the icky orange ginger instead of the nice red shiney ginger!! It's driving me mad!! Shes due to be wormed today and seems normal behavior wise so I don't think theres anything underlying. We have recently changed her diet from Simple Systems to Spillers and she definitely looked better on the SS so I will probably change her feed completely once the Spillers is finished!! So in the meantime I want to add something to her diet to give her coat a better look. She will not eat oil so need something powdery or in pellet form!! Anyone any opinions on the three options mentioned or any other ideas? She is a lazy mare so if it provides more energy that's good!! I have had her on Pink powder previously which gave her a lovely coat but when your coming to the end of the tub she seems to come out in lumps, this has happened on to separate occasions so alas I cannot use it :(

Linseed if you are after a decent coat.

If you after rapid weight gain a bag of Equi Jewel and then back to linseed.

Take care with the Equi Jewel it really does put a massive top on if you use it and give the horse plenty of work,

Another vote for linseed. My tb was looking a little poor, but a week on the linseed and he already looks so much better. He is having pink powder as well and is calm, chilled out and has lost some of his stresshead ways.

I haven't tried Outshine or Equi-jewel, so can't comment on them.

Outshine is a poor relative compared to Equijewel or linseed. As stated about for weight gain/extra gloss then a bag of equijewel would be best, long term unless you are doing a lot of work or showing then linseed is better.

Linseed.

PS tried outshine on one of her ginger mares years ago, and then a ginger gelding also. Didn't do much for them.

We've both tried the equijewel on CS and Fig. It sent Fig bonkers, but did make him very shiny. It did nothing for CS' coat, who is now looks shiny and sleek again after changing them both back to linseed.

ETA when I got Fig he was very very poor with a very dull coat, the linseed (2 mugs a day) really helped gloss him up and get the condition on.

My mare had a rain scold last year and lost clumps of fur all over her back and her coat generally just looked poor where she's be rubbing. I started giving Linseeds (as well as treating the skin) and it grew back pretty quickly in better condition in fact her whole coat looked a damn sight healthier.

So would definately recommend it!

Can't comment on the others though :)

Super thanks :) She doesn't need any more weight on her just needs to build more topline! Don't know anywhere around us that sells Linseed so I shall have to make some inquiries!!

Try Gravenhorse or Charnwood Milling websites. Both sell micronised linseed meal and deliver, although your local feed merchant might be able to source the Charnwood linseed meal for you, which saves you the delivery charge if you can pick it up.

Although, if you're ooking for improved topline as well as improved skin and coat condition, you might want to check out Gravenhorse's Lingold. It's a combination of flaked full fat soya (a good lysine provider) and linseed meal, in one bag. Might be worth considering, too.

I have tried all 3 with varying results.

I have used Outshine for years, just a mug a day for my TB and half a mug for my cob x and they absolutely gleam. I get a lot of comments about my cob x - someone said to me recently they could use her as a mirror for applying their lipstick!

Last year to cut costs I switched to linseed and they both lost some shine. I guess I wasn't giving enough as everyone on here seems to swear by it but I did find it a faff mixing in a powder whereas the Outshine is a palatable nugget. Maybe if I'd used more I would have kept the gleam but in my case I far prefer the Outshine to micronised linseed.

In April my TB dropped a lot of weight, muscle tone & topline so I put her onto EquiJewel - in all my years of owning horse I don't think I've ever used anything that's built up such muscle and topline in such a short amount of time (with work obviously). I spoke to Baileys about this and they said the Outshine would have done the same if fed in larger amounts but tbh I'm not so sure, in winter I feed 3 mugs a day to my TB for condition and it's never done what 2 measures a day of EquiJewel did! However she did lose a lot of shine, and I mean a LOT, when compared to how shiny she is on Outshine.
