Elsie licks her lips a lot, sometimes for several minutes at a time. It seems pretty random, she almost always does it when we go to bed (she sleeps in our room) but during the day I haven't noticed any particular pattern.

Could it be another stress/insecurity thing? She used to vomit a lot, the vet said that was stress related, but since she has settled in she rarely does that anymore.

It drives OH mad as Else is so noisy when she licks her lips! Couldn't be noisier if she tried!

Has anyone else come accross this?

I have a Rottie who does this - he is a licker of people, dogs, himself, anything that stands still long enough, really - and he will also lick his lips until I tell him to stop!

He's lying behind me now doing it, very relaxed after finishing his dinner. There doesn't seem to be any stress involved and he's always been like this.

I sympathise with your OH because it drives me barmy too - the dog thinks his name is 'Stop licking' sometimes ;) - but tell him it could be worse, my little JRT used to sleep on my pillow and suck her paw until she went asleep and then snore in my ear :D

Yep mine does it and always when we are about to go to sleep. I call it clapping and all i say is stop clapping and he does. Its always when chilling so i think he does it to chill !!!

Hmmm, food for thought there. She is obviously relaxing before going to bed at night, she has been out and had a wee, had a drink and a few bites to eat (free fed) so she doesn't starve to death during the night :D, and is settling down in her favourite place.

I just assumed that it was stress related, but thinking about it, the licking started when the stress vomiting stopped, which would perhaps indicate she does the licky thing when she is happy and relaxed.

She is definately happy and relaxed at the moment, flat on her back, feet in the air and snoring like a pig :D It is lovely to see the change in her as she has settled.

I dont think its stress related, as she does it when she is chilling and settling down for bed its probabley just that. As other other dogs seem to do the same thing in almost the exact same circumstances I wouldnt worry about it unless it started to spill over into her normal day and then I would be thinking maybe it was her teeth or something mouth related.
