I've had my pony fror coming up to three months and he's been a bit of a head ******, when riding, sice I got him. I spoke to the old owners and discovered that he hadn't had his teeth done for over two years, so straight away I called out the dentist. They found that they were very sharp at one side, coincidentally the side he had been pulling at when schooling, and were filed down.

However, during this time I have noticed that he sometimes quivers and shakes his upper lip/nostils, and after feeding him in the field last night noticed he was doing this again when eating the hay. However, I dont think it's anything to do with the hay as he has done this before in other situations. It was vey windy in the field last night, and he is a v nervous pony, so I was wondering whether it may be a reaction/comfort to that.

Any advice or suggestions welcome as I am a little concerned?!

If he is doing it on perpose (is in controll of it) I think he is just trying to move the food around in his mouth and maybe its getting stuck somewhere making him uncomfortable. Check he hasn't got little gaps with food packing between his front teeth. If it is an involuntary thing he can't controll it is probably due to nerve damage somewhere which there is unlikely to be anything you can do about and as long as he can pick his food up ok I wouldn't worry too much.

I have known horses to do it with their bottom lip and it has always been a stress/excitement thing so I don't know if it would be the same kind of thing.
