My daughters little event horse has always been a bit mucky round his bottom (he is a mostly white coloured!) but recently every time he breaks wind some dark liquid comes out of his bottom and drips down his back legs. We are washing him down at least 3 times a day as I am worried it will make him sore and of course it's unsightly and smelly! He appears well in himself and his droppings aren't runny, the only change to his diet is he has recently started on speedy beet but this problem was happening before this. he has wright pack haylage, hard feed is course mix, hifi original, and speedy beet, carrots and a couple of apples. He also has a treat ball daily with pony nuts in it when he is in. I have never experienced this before other than when turning out on to spring grass for the first week or so. Has anyone else had anything like this happen before?

feed hay instead of haylage and you may find the problem will go away

Yes thanks for that. I know that if haylage isn't made correctly and baled too wet, this can go through them but he has been on the same haylage for 18 months and it's only about the last couple of months that we have noticed a big difference in how dirty his back end is. I suppose it could be this particular batch?i always get it from the same supplier, but don't know if he gets it from different places. He isn't keen on hay because I wouldn't feed him it dry as we need his stamina to be as good as possible and I have tried steaming and wetting it and the fussy little beggar turns his nose up at it! I guess if he was hungry a enough he would eat it though!

Try adding some brewers yeast and consider cutting back on the molassed feed, HiFi and coarse mix are both highly molassed and are likely to be contributing.
