List the things you have to pay/budget for, for your horse

Any supplements/ lotions/ potions/ shampoo etc I get from Tesco rather than paying an extra £10 as its says 'equine' on the bottle.
Shavings- we're on rubber matting have a half bed lots cheaper in the long run.
Shoes- We're going barefoot as its cheaper and pony has good feet.
Sharing haylage with someone else. We were paying £8 a bale this winter that lasted 3 weeks.
In the summer would it be possible for you to go on grass livery?

I'm sure I have loads more but can't think of them atm, hope this helps for a start.

Livery - £25 a week - teach one morning a week in lieu of this
Shoeing-£60 every 7/8 weeks

oohh just remembered he also has a super duper iron supplement for the last six months from the vet at £90 a bottle

luckily i keep mine at home, however if you were to keep it on our yard it would be

or £100 all in
plus
farrier, any meds or suppliments, back person or other requirements, worming, jabs, vets bills, dentist etc
also rugs, equipment etc (you may have a rug breaker or need a new one for diff season ie fly rug etc)

Sorry, I'm not talking about where to save money, but what you have to pay for. Rather like Toomanyhorses26's post :) (thank you TMH26 ;))

I have my own little yard and don't do stabling/bedding unless it's for veterinary emergencies :)

I don't do special budgeting, tbh, it would depress me ;) I've got own yard, so when excluding water/electric/rates/ins/mortgage for the yard, it costs me on average £150 a month to keep a horse all in.

Ahh okay sorry! Eekk! don't even want to look into that  I think last time we added up including buying new tack and comp fees it was about £8000 a year!

Cheers guys. So far I have:

Field rent/livery
Haylage
Balancer
Chaff
Carrots
Cubes
Any supplements
Shoes
Insurance
Teeth
Back
Wormer
Saddle checks
Vaccinations
Rug cleaning
Fly repellant/hoof moist

Have a nagging feeling that I've missed something...

Also, what about lessons / training and/or competing costs if that's something you are looking at doing regularly. Also all those extra bits of tack, rugs, essentials, that, at the time you think are very important!! :D

Freezemarking
Bigger horsebox/trailer possibly(I am having to do just this for our gift horse as my wonderful 3.5t has too small a payload for 2 big horses, sadly)
Additional fees for passes to riding in forestry comission or national trust land
Different size rugs/bits/bridles etc

Bedding!
Rug & tack repairs
lessons & competing
horse transport costs
assistance/cover for if you are on hols/delayed at work etc
membership fees of RC & affiliated bodies (if applicable)
Minor vets fees

assistance/cover for if you are on hols/delayed at work etc

That's what my mother is for! :D Oh and Weevil, she's permanently indebted to me since I gave her a puppy!

Thanks for the replies all :)

I think I need to budget for competing and a box completely separately. I won't be in a position to be buying a box until next January, unfortunately...

Have you included a small amount each month for saving towards emergencies? Theres always going to be that eek horse trashed rug and im very skint this month moment!

Are u considering set up costs seperately, like buying horse, rugs, tack etc in the first place? X

Well it's pretty impossible to 'budget' for such incidents so I'm working out more the day to day costs and then obviously just make sure that the bank account is healthy enough for emergencies.

I was going to say I'm very lucky in that I can't remember the last time I had to throw out a rug, but perhaps the fact I am on first names terms, and just had a friendly chat this morning with my vets receptionist, says it all...

Well yes, that's whole other list! :)

Horse
Vetting
Transport
Saddles
Bridles
Rugs
Boots
etc, etc. Feel free to add to it!

Unfortunately I lost quite a lot of money having a horse vetted and xrayed last summer that failed, so I hope I don't go through that again :o

Lol! I know that one, but then they are very nice and helpful there!!! I really hope that it works out for you this time!! How is your mare now? is there any chance of any form of recovery? Henry is currently trotting sound under saddle but I know it can easily change and the prognosis wasn't even where we are now. Hopefully this year neither of us will be visiting the equine clinic!!!

Thanks LP.

No, no chance of "recovery" at all. :( I'll never ride her again :( However we hope that we'll be able to breed from her :) Glad to hear your boy is doing well :)

Such a shame as she is lovely!! Everything still firmly crossed for my lad tho as if he re-injures that will be it for him :( The cotton wool is stuck to him like glue lol :)

Thank you :) She is indeed lovely, very lovely, and despite everything/my accident we love her to pieces, so fingers crossed we can get a mini Be :)

Best of luck to your boy. Keep us posted :) xx
