It never feels like there's enough to update/share after each comp and I've been competing on my own this year (OH has been working every weekend) so not many photos but as Fizz's last race of the season was the other week I thought I'd do a bit of a summary of her first season doing Open Flyball.

Our first comp of the year was meant to be her open debut but they cancelled open racing because of the weather so we ended up joining another team so she got a run. Fizz doesn't do bad weather/mud but at least with it being starters she could wear her jumper :rolleyes3: This was also when we discover that the other team shouting 'Ready' isn't conducive to whippet racing

She was fine against a different team

But this was when we were against a team who were revving the dogs, she jumped the back board, into the other lane and chased the other dog :redface3:

May saw our eventual open debut...she helped her team come first and no dog chasing just some issues with blue lane (she gets the ball turning towards the other dogs, gets competitive and runs down the side as it's faster )

Her second open was at a steam fair which she coped amazingly with, we were a team of 4 so she ran every race and besides the fact we broke out every single race she did me proud. It meant we set a new seed time for our team which made things difficult in terms of Champs but we had a team reshuffle and decided to only take 2 of the 3 teams to give us the best chance.

Then our home competition which was her first competition in her Champs team, we don't know what was up but she was not herself. She only ran two races and no silliness but she was really lack luster and just not up for it however the team came first

Our last competition before Champs saw a morning of hammering rain which the diva did not approve of, complete with coming to a stop under the marquee  She raced well in the afternoon when the sun came out and the team came 2nd.

This was the morning

That took us to Champs where she was back on form, raced her heart out but found the turbo button so any race she was in we broke out. We ended up 4th but most importantly she coped with the covered lanes and atmosphere perfectly.

That brings us to our last competition of the season, she very much enjoyed being back with her mates and ran every race...she even got faster in the afternoon! We ended up coming second which was a lovely way to end the year.

All in all she's really done me proud this year and she's coped with the move up to open really well. She isn't an all weather dog which we already knew would be an issue and we're hoping to try her indoors in November to see how she copes (the noise may be an issue) but otherwise we just have some training then she's having a well deserved holiday :D

Congratulations on a great season!

Sorry for my ignorance but what do you mean by 'breaking out'?

Fingers crossed she takes to the indoor comps, given her aversion to weather :D

She's a super cool looking dog

You have a seed time for your team which dictates which division you race in and almost determines your breakout time so you can't put a slow seed time when you have really fast dogs to cheat and win. Our problem this year has been that the smallest dog on Fizz's team was attacked on holiday so hasn't been able to compete most of the year, he balances out the likes of Fizz who are a bit faster with being slower but having him in the team keeps the jumps small which helps the bigger dogs.

So 'breaking out' is sort of exceeding your handicap? So going faster than you should? Is that right? Are you disqualified for it at the time?
She looks amazing, I have never seen a whippet do anything like that and am so impressed. Pretty girl. :-)

Yes that's right :-)

There are plenty of whippets out doing it! Some are terrifyingly fast!

I have never seen flyball, I keep intending to go and watch my neice but I can't cope with indoors - too loud for me - and have missed another outdoor season now. I assumed it was all collies with the odd 'novelty' dog!

Fizz at the moment is one of the slowest whippets I’ve seen out there but most of that is her turn on the box and lack of catching ability  now she’s having softer balls she’s much happier and it’s showing in her times. She’s a competitive little madam so tends to beat the other dog back if they get ahead of her but lots to work on.
