So I have a Corgi who's not a fan of big dogs and I am (nothing serious just snaps if they get too rough...I don't blame him to be honest I wouldn't want a Lab jumping on me either).

I'm looking at getting another in the near future and not sure what kind of breeds to look at. I don't like 'little' dogs (you all know the rat on rope types) and Jack is a big dog on short legs and I'd like another like that (although one that doesn't moult constantly would be nice

Whippets

They are robust little things (although everyone seems to think they are frail

) and are lovely to have around - clean, quiet, short coated so easy to look after, and soooo sweet

My friend has a Sheltie who is a lovely little animal - very friendly and well behaved. She is long-haired but seems to actually moult less than some shorter-haired breeds. I do usually end up with a couple of hairs on me when she's been sat on my lap but they're easily got rid of

My friend has a sheltie - she is lovely!

Not keen on certain cockers - seems to be the showing bred types, the slightly ulgier working types I've met have been super though, in temperament and behaviour!

How can you say they are ugly! (The one in the middle doesn't count, he's not a cocker!) And every single one of them has a fab nature, otherwise they wouldn't have 5 of the things!

They are beautiful, I don't think I phrased it right, if you now post a pic of the showing bred cockers you'll see a distinct difference...foot in mouth

You couldn't beat this one for temperament!

(Yes, I know it's the third time I have posted this picture but come on people, feel the cuteness

See now that one is more a showing bred one and in looks is very different to the working strain...in my humble opinion. Sorry guys, think my judgement is clouded by 3 certain cockers I know (showing bred ones) and I seem set in my thoughts

He is show bred and he has a great temperament as long as you aren't a ham sandwich or bit of cake

Children, other dogs, horses - great.

You sure it isn't the way they are treated? I have noticed that people can mollycoddle show bred ones at times, which in my opinion is not good for any dog.

I would say Severnmiles is right, you do tend to get a few that are neurotic snappy creatures. I used to groom a couple that had to be muzzled and restrained and I dreaded taking the muzzle off and putting it back in the kennel.
I think some are just funny sods, as with any breed, but because there are soooooooo many Show Cockers around you hear of it more - plus people expect them to be soft spanielly goodness and when they aren't, they are a bit shocked and tell everyone

Knowing the people you're possibly right as they were lovely puppies

And you are so right there, my mothers father is definitely guilty of that - and it shows!! His Schnauzer is a little brat!!!

I do like working bred Cockers! And staffies....ooo decisions...

Meandmyself - Yorkies come under the rat on rope catagory I'm afraid, just don't like them.

Aside from my shout out for Boston terriers (pure muscle, no yapping tendencies, friendly to all, hang with the big dogs) my other thought was for a PBGV...

This is Ollie with a scruffy puppy cut (which I personally prefer) He is almost 3
I LOVE Cocker spaniels though and would like a cocker next (we currently have a goldie and a lab, neither of which go with the 'low moulting' criteria!

Get a Field Spaniel! They are the best things on four doggy legs

Friendly, gentle & kind but ours will protect if he feels he has to.

They also are a quiet breed it seems, ours didn't find his bark for months after we had him. We actually wondered if he was mute he was that quiet

How cute is this?!

Thank you all for the ideas.....any more recomendations are very welcome!

Are cockers high maintenance exercise wise? I'll be working full time and although they'll have two a day plus dog walker midday I'd be worried about something too high energy getting bored and doing damage.
