Little flys in ears

Just wondered if anyone else has noticed these ? I noticed my horse had red marks in his ears where it looked like something was biting him, years ago some sheep broke into our fields and the horses got ticks but whenever I'd checked until last night I couldn't find anything in them. When I went to get him in from the field I though lets have a look in the daylight, had a look and out the little critters flew, what do you think is the best to treat it with, I put nappy cream on it last night hoping it would last all day today so they didn't fly back in, someone turns him out in the mornings, I didn't want to put anything on it that would drip in his ear

If they are the same ear gnats we get here then the treatment is yeast infection cream! (Believe it or not) You prob can get some special cream from your vet but I imagine the cost is quadruple.

Several years ago my gelding at the time had bloody crusty scabs in his ears where the evil little blood suckers had really did a number on him. The vet took a look and said to get the my nearest drug store and get yeat infection cream. The problem was that most of them are suppositories now so it was hard to find a tube of it. The Pharmacists were laughing so hard at me when I told them what it was for but I did manage to find the right stuff for about $5. I was told to apply daily for a week.

This is what you would do if it gets really bad and let go for a bit. It can cause a lot of scaring if you let it go. The best course is prevention and that is done by a fly mask with ears. Make sure the netting is small as these gnats are tiny ( assuming they are the same as the ones we have) I also like to spray the ear parts of the fly mask with a little fly spray before I put it on just for added protection. If your horse does not like a mask there are fly repellant creams the you can rub right into the ear but I would not do this if they are very bloody/irritated.


I would of course check any of this out with your vet before you do it as I would hate to be giving you bad advice for what is going on with you specifically. This is just what I have been advised and what had worked for me. I'll google ours to see what they are called as I cannot remember. we manily have a big problem with them spring/ early summer here

Ok thanks, problem is he already has a muzzle on, fly fringe, if I put a mask on as well he'd be in a right strop, I might look into this though as an option, and check out the cream

I damp a piece of cotton wool and really get rid of the excess water and then clean the blood away and then get sudocream and apply a thin layer all around the inside of the ear - obviously not deeply. This stops the flys from going in there in the first place. It lasts for around a week with my Shetland and I simply repeat the process whenever I need to.
Sadly my Section A hates having her ears touched so she has to make do.
