Can you? How do you?

So we've got an Ifor 511, the big one. If we were to procure a little pony as a companion, so anything from standard Shetland to Welsh A/B size say, how do we go about transporting it? Is it possible to travel them in safety and comfort in the 511 or would it be better/ necessary to hire a 3.5 Tonne lorry? Or would travelling loose in a cattle trailer with a good deep bed of straw be even better say?

Hypothetical currently still. Haven't been able to get serious about finding the official Utility Pony yet (fecking house sale etc) but thinking about companions anyway.

What's the smallest pony that could travel "properly" with the breast bar at a correct height in the Ifor 511 anyway?

Any pictures of cute little horses in any form of transport most welcome. Do you reckon I could just shove a standard Shetland in the back of the Disco? 😂

We got an extra lower set of breast and breech bar fittings put in when the 510 was in for servicing. The breast bar was in the usual location, but lower, and the breach bar was lower and also much closer to accommodate a pony. Would suit a 12 hands pony size better than a Shetland, though, we put these in for the foster ponies.

As above, we bought another set of brackets and fitted them as low as possible, limited by the centre partition depth. This is fine for standard Shetlands

It’s still too high for minis so with them we put the bar as high as possible to keep trailer integrity and cross tie them further back

I didn't realise that could be done. Doh! Good long term solution for Utility Pony if s/he ends up being on the small side. But probably wouldn't want to get that done for Hypothetical Companion Pony pick up. But there is someone who hires out a 3.5 tonne box up here so that's probably my short term answer.

How do you cross tie? I mean what do you attach the ropes to? Can't picture the inside of my trailer very well but it's all very smooth.

You could ram a couple of bales of straw across, or a dog crate, or get your other half to cut a sheet of wood to fix across between partition and side wall.
My tinies travel tied as we don't go far, but if they were doing a long trip then they would have an enclosed section and be loose. (I have a 3.5, they travel tied to the bum end of the partition, so are facing forward, then cant try and squeeze between end of partition at other end)

We have a home made adjustable breast bar consisting of a chain inside a length of steel tube fixed to the trailer by spring fixings (like on a halter rope), coach bolts and washers.
For a very small one I would use a hay bales in the trailer nose instead of a hay net.

Fitting lower brackets has been on my "to do" list for a while because my little one loads herself then stays put for the journey. Only issue is she has to unload first or she ducks under the breast bar before I'm ready.
