Good evening! A couple of quick fire questions!

So wee Herbie is apparently 10hh - still to measure but WHW noted him down as this. Not the chunkiest Shetland in the world but definitely not the lightest! I've had a good old go at measuring him from chest to tail and he comes in just over 4ft.
So I'm thinking a 4,3ft rug? Experience's and others sizing would be much appreciated!

Now I'm so happy that the two boys are getting on great but problem is not when I take one away from the other they are not happy, shouting for each other, running about riot. They have only been there 1 week- maybe I'm taking things too fast? I was wanting them both to realise fairly quickly that they don't need each other constantly but I'm thinking now they might just need time to settle first. - that being said I've only separated them for a 10 minute walk in-hand and a 20 minute hack.

Now..
Pictures.- a couple action shots from day 1!

recommend horseware rhino rugs & dinky rugs my Shetland takes 4'9 and is 10.1. Regards separation ride out & put Shetland in stable, they do get used to the routine you have just got to crack on and do it. But would always leave pony in safe environment ie so cant jump out of field stable. good luck x

I use Ruggles rugs on my mini.

I think you need to build it up slowly with being left. Start by taking one out of the field making sure the one left has some hay or something, then increase the distance and time. Iff you did it every day it wouldn't take long.

Thanks all! I thought it would be Best to gradually build it up but I really down expect my boy to get to attached to the shetland... In fact it was the last thing I expected he has always been a happy boy on his own before now.
And thank you super trooper - hope I have as much fun with him as you do with your boy!

He is extremely cute and I love his trot! I'd recommend Maxima Equestrian rugs, especially as yours is in between sizes. Maxima rugs have more adjustability in the front fastenings that most other rugs, so easier to adjust the fit. Also their turnouts are made of 1200 denier fabric, so tougher and more waterproof than standard 600 denier rugs.

That's the problem I think. He's waited for a pal for so long he doesn't want this one to leave him, ever. He probably was ok without a friend, but life is always better with a pal.

I like Shires Tempest Lite turnout rugs for my Shetland x Dartmoor and Welsh section A. The amigos don't fit them so well, nor do rhinos. I've also tried a couple of dinky rugs but prefer the Shires. Having said that, I do like the amigo stable rugs.
Looks a lovely little pony.

He has always had company before we have just moved to home hence the reason we now have wee Herbie as company :)

I believe Mark Todd pony rugs go as small as 4ft3. I have an 11.1hh part bred Shetland/Welsh A, she has a 4ft9 Mark Todd pony turnout that fits her just fine.

We have Dinky rugs and mark Todd. Our chunky 37" is 4'3 too :) TBH he has retired so no longer needs any, not sure if we have any left for sale....

Two things I have learned about tiny ponies and rugs. 1: Some ponies, mentioning no names Ted, are extremely unimpressed about wearing rugs. Even when he's clipped, he has a dense, fuzzy coat, and he gets seriously hot if he's rugged - so he takes it off!
2: Check depth as well as length - Ted has an Amigo, which fits beautifully front to back (It's 3ft9 btw - he's 32inches), but it comes down past his knees, and makes it hard for him to move!

Ruggles for me too both my shetlands wear them and so does my cob. I've used them for about 6 years and never had any slipping , rubs or leaks.

If the first rug doesn't fit you can always find a your second shettie in a size to fit the rug... Just to stop it going to waste (and fix the separation issues) you understand... :-)

Lovely Scottish equines all in the right place together!

Haha... Good idea!

Aww his cute, lovely to see another WHW shetty :) I now have three of them from WHW and one of my own.

My two mini shetlands take 4ft and 4'3 rugs. My 10hh takes a 4'9 - 5ft depending on make but she's built like a tank haha! I find Ruggles rugs fit my shetlands quiet nicely.

They must be quite addictive then.... Oh dear what have I got into!

They are very addictive haha.. Just don't do what I did hence ending up with another two WHW ponies, look on their rehoming page just to see how many they have for homing. It results in more shetlands moving in!

One of my latest WHW shetlands has turned out to be a very opinionated old lady who when gets one on her turns into a mini rhino on legs. For a rising 26 year old she's full of it.
