Took Spider to the vets today for her 1st scan she was very well behaved, went straight in teh stocks and was fine with the scan with no sedation bless her.

Turns out she was in season but had 2 lovely folicles ready to go with but of course that means twins

Trust her! So we are going to wait as obviously the risk is too high to squash one etc etc, so back up on Weds for another scan to make sure cycle all ok, then I think back up the week after for AI hopefully. But it was nice to get going and see she is all healthy!

Am not sure

I just thought it sounded like a bit of a cop out on the vet's part... Either the follicles were on opposite ovaries, and a deep uterine insemination could be performed, or they were on the same ovary (and generally these ovulate 24 hours apart), and so she could have been bred on the second ovulation (as oocytes only have a 12-24 hour lifespan once ovulated). Pinching is generally quite successful too...

I read something quite recently that suggested that 30% of estrus cycles result in the development of two "active"/"dominant" follicles, but only a quarter of these actually result in a double ovulation...

Anyway, just some thoughts...

Hannah had two like this, and she just had one pinched at 14 days... The vet who inseminated Han is a AI expert and does literally hundreds of mares a year. He also said what AndyPandy said about many cycles produce 2, and if we waited the chances are we would have the same situation next time.

Absolutely - some mares are prone to twin ovulations... in fact, I've worked with a lovely mare for embryo transfer - she's great because she has double ovulations nearly every time, yielding two embryos per flush

In discussing twin ovulations, and management of multiple ovulations in a VERY recent textbook, it is stated "Since the development of "crushing"/[pinching] one of the conceptions at 14 to 16 days, there is no need to follow any of these ["twin avoidance"] strategies."

That's really interesting... They actually think Han would more than likely throw up twins again the next time she is put into foal, but if you scan at 14 days it is such a simple procedure
