euck, poor things.
my mum remembers live beetles as jewellery in the 60s... they had a chain glued to the back of their wing-case and you clipped the other end to your top, so they could crawl around...

People use to have platform shoes with goldfish in them. So its not new by any means

Trouble is just like with industry we expect countries to adopt our standards early rather than go through the phases like we did (eg. factories being 'greenner' after we did our own industrial revolution)

There is no harm in showing these places the errors of their ways. Animals should not be made to suffer because these places still view life as cheap.
