Well, I used to like dark bays and blacks. But ever since I have become the proud owner of a gorgeous liver chestnut boy, this is my favourite color (preferably with a lighter colored mane and tail). But I noticed that mine changes color thouroughout the year. He goes from being a bright orangey chestnut in summer:

To a darker shade in autumn and winter (which makes the color of his mane and tail stand out more):

So what about yours?

PS: Can anybody enlighten me about the origins of the term "liver chestnut"? I do not think that his color resembles a liver

I always said I would never have a chestnut as I'd never met a nice one and hey ho here I am with a liver chestnut section d and she is just the best ever. She also changes colour with the seasons but I dont know how to get pictures on here.

Thank you for your replies and pics!
bbcrystal - I have ridden several more liver chestnuts before and they were all good as gold! Maybe they are in a different category than lighter chestnuts :p
Faracat - I am partial to flaxen manes and tails and think your boy is just gorgeous.
Rhino - Can you please put up a pic of your boy, I want to see his colour.
Fany du Champ - Your boy's colour seems to change even more than mine! My dear boy is an 17 yo, 16.3 hh Selle Français Stallion by Voltaire and out of a Jalisco B mare. He really is a sweetheart who can be ridden and handled by a child and he means the world to me...

He is the same age as my lad, 17. He looks a sweetheart. What do you do with him? I don't know much about SFs, although there seem to be more around now. My lad is a KWPN Gelders Paard (Gelderlander)

He used to be a showjumper (as his bloodlines show!). But due to being overfaced by an enthusiastic and competitive but novice owner, he ended up a sour horse who refused even to step over a pole on the ground  So I bought him and turned him into a dressage diva (here he is in all his matchy matchy glory!):

He seems to thrive on flatwork, tries his heart out for me every day and I seriously believe that he could have been a GP horse if he were only younger. But I try to look at it from the bright side, not to regret "what if's" and be thankful for every moment I share with this kindest of souls :)

Oh, if you insist! ;) :D

Doesn't show quite how dark his tail is but it's the best I have on the pc :)

Thank you for the pic. He really is a pale chestnut!
I've read on another thread that you are having some problems with him, I hope he gets well soon...

He is gorgeous especially in his dressage matchy matchy as you call it.
My lad is an ex-pro CDE horse so has competed a lot at top levels. But he is happy now just with a bit of schooling and lots of pampering! Do you stand him? I am afraid I don't know much about SF breeding lines or really much about the breed at all but he is a very hand some boy, no doubts about that!

I've previously read about your boy in another thread and know how you nurtured him to what he is today. Mine was a bit like him in that he trusted noone and started to shake all over whenever somebody on the ground came near him while I was riding. He couldn't stand even the sight of a course of jumps and got really tense! But now he trusts me with his life and is really chilled. Although he covered mares in the past, I do not use him as a stallion. His bloodline is like golddust in my country and I would like to have a foal by him for myself. But we don't have a mare (we own two stallions). I keep on hoping I will find a way before it's too late.

What a lovely, lovely colour. A beautiful boy! My two best horses ever were a 'red' chestnut mare (bucked all the notions about chestnut mares) and a liver chestnut hunting pony gelding - another darling. You must be very proud of him.

Thank you, that's really kind :) We are confident he will heal enough to enjoy a very, very well earned retirement - he owes me absolutely nothing! :)

Liver chestnut is my lucky colour.
Lucky because my KWPN is one of the less flashy liver chestnuts. So although he has a pedegree to die for,he was not a saleable colour for dressage divas,so I was able to buy him for 1000s less than the asking price.
His coat colour varies depending on diet,so I could make his colour as flashy as his paces.
He also has a fab dorsal stripe which I love.
He is my second liver chestnut. Both have been VERY stubborn and I have wondered if this is a trait.
I also love the dutch words for his colour 'Donker Vos.'.....I think it translates as 'dark fox'.

We should all put them in the same field and play spot which is yours. The colours look so similar!
@abittodd! I know a horse which is the spitting image of yours! Pretty horse

We've got a liver chestnut in foal to another liver chestnut (not intentional!) so fingers crossed for another! She seems to be a different colour each year.
Lovely pictures everyone

Could you not "hire" a mare to breed a foal from him, maybe pay someone to use their broodmare. I know it would have to suit him and have the right breeding but it could be worth it, he looks a sweetie.

Said (say-eed) the first one is a CDE (caballo de Espagnol) and is a bit more red in colour with a lighter mane and tail. Rumi, in the last two, was much darker and had lovely dapples. He was so shiny you could see your face in him (very satisfying to little groom like me) but very ticklish :p I think Liver chesnuts are stunning :D

Hugo has always said it is the best colour - changes with the seasons so Mum doesn't get bored! ;)

Can you see this pic, by the way? I can't see it in the post - I have to open it in a new tab. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, please?
