Short term bute wont be a prob. We had old boy on bute for 3 years! The liver is a remarkable organ which will regenerate. If you are concerned, buy some Milk Thistle from your Health Food Shop which helps to flush the liver of toxins. Also good for alchohol abuse

Meloxicam is an alternative that is labeled for use in Dogs
I personally used it (extra label) in Horses for long term treatments without problems. It is seems to be at least the same effective with Bute but more mild to the stomach and less toxic to the liver. The Dog product is called "Metacam" but there are other brands available online that contain the same active ingredient and are suitable for Horse dosing.

I strongly recommend too the milk thistle for long term treatments with Bute or any other meds that are known to be liver toxic.

My horse has just tested to have liver damage by blood test. If it is less than 75% damaged as in my case the liver regenerates and repairs. My horse is on milk thistle and he has picked up and back to normall in him self in a month he is being re tested in two months to check its getting better.

The horse I have on loan came in really ill one day, just over, two months ago and could hardly walk with no stomache movement at all and panting heavily. My vet did not expect him to make it through the night, however, he has since recovered from the bile duct damage, in my opinion all due to Milk Thistle, but he is still very anaemic and is being tested in two months time to see if there is any improvement (there hasn't been any since his illness). They think it was the protein in haylage that accelerated the symptoms.
