Have recently had problems with my ex-racer & raised liver enzymes. Has been treated with antibiotics, restore & milk thistle and second bloods have come back all clear. It's not the first time bloods have come back with these enzymes raise and the vet said at the time that it may be worth scoping him for ulcers.
The more I've looked into the symptoms with ulcers the more I'm beginning to think that this may be the issue. A few facts:
When we got him, he was very poor & reacted badly to a high cereal diet.
He produces more poo than anything I've ever seen.
He often box walks but not all the time.
He lost condition this time when the season started & he was working very hard.
His liver was scanned & appeared healthy.
He often gets very grumpy when being groomed/touched over his loins behind the saddle but, again, not all the time.
I'm just wondering if the raised liver enzymes may be symptomatic of ulcers & are raised when they flare up so we may well be treating the wrong thing. Also, if this may be the case, what sort of results have people had with the supplements out there, any recommendations? Anyone with any experience of this?
Apologies for the long post! Many thanks for any assistance.
