Our welsh sec c developed liver failure sat night. Blood readings were 1048 upper limit is 600. He had developed nuerological problems and failing eyesight. We asked vet to try for him. After a horrendous sat night he was much calmer sun so was transported to hospital. He was treated and next morning the vet was very surprised that he had improved so much. As of this evening he is off his drip eating well and seeing and pooing and really pleased to see us. Yesterday he had a scan which showed up nothing so had biopsy.we now have to wait for results and vet has now said if it shows fibrosis he should be PTS even though he is looking and acting so well. She says his clinical signs are not good and he can't go home with children. He lives out so being stabled is probably too boring for him. What we you do. He's a lead rein and a pony that just potters about. He's only 9

I would want to know why the vet thinks he can't go home with children.

As for what to do next, I would wait for the results of the biopsy before making any decisions about his future.

Milk Thistle supplement really helped my mare when she was on the verge of needing a biopsy for her liver. Her bloods were way over what they should be. Within 6 weeks there was such a noticeable difference in the results in her blood counts.

My vet recommended it saying that a few people she knew had used it with great results. The sad part is that she got sacked (read as made redundant) and the main reason was that she wasn't making the practise enough money from recommending things like this.

I've read about milk thistle . Ask vet nurse what he had in his feed thinking they might have added a supplement but he just had his meds in it.

The neurological and eyesight problems combined with liver failure isn't hopeful short term and certainly not long term away from constant veterinary monitoring. Milk Thistle, at this stage will make little to no temporary benefit. :(

It's an awful decision to make when an animal has picked up in the short term in a Vet Clinic, sadly it is doubtful his health will last back at home.

I agree that the health problems raised would make your pony completely unsuitable around children, also in respect to ongoing suffering on behalf of your pony, so in this case I would follow Professional advise and PTS.

Prolonged and unnecessary suffering serves no good to all.

My sympathies.

Have to agree with your vet, sorry :( my mare had raised liver enzymes and it made her incredibly spooky/flighy and downright dangerous to deal with at times and she was at the lower end of high levels. Milk thistle worked for her as it was picked up very early after a colic episode, but even at that stage the vet said it may or may not be enough.

I couldn't have let any kids handle her around that time, she was bad enough with the very experienced staff at the livery yard i was on!

The changes in her when she recovered were incredible, she's like a totally different horse. Scary how much something like that can change their character.
