Why do some people think it is okay for their dog/s to run loose around the yard???? I don't mind the livery dogs loose at the yard when they are kept under control and with their owners but.... as for the rest, running in packs barking and running around all over the place unsupervised.

It's driving me nuts ATM. Dogs cr*pping in my stable, weeing on my hay, running up behind my horses whilst I am trying to lead them to and from the fields.

I can't say anything I'll be a miserable biatch, but honestly

it should go without saying, surely. If one of my spooky horses lashes out with a hind foot and catches one of the dogs at it springs around its backlegs, or a dog shoots out of nowhere and one of my horses spooks and rears on the road and has an accident I FOR ONE AM NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY. Nor will the dog's owners I am sure, so why don't they have the manners and common sense to understand not everyone's horses like dogs jumping around them or having their hay and stable urinated and pooped on. Grrrrrrrrr.

*Deep breaths*

Okay, rant over BUT SERIOUSLY, SHOULD MY HORSE HURT ONE OF THESE DOGS AM I LIABLE? Flaming hope not

I have mixed feelings about this. I think it is good that your horse gets used to dogs running about as you often meet dogs when out hacking and it can desensitise horses to them. However, the dogs do need to be kept under control and certainly shouldn't be going in the stable, hay etc. Also the dogs' owners should take responsiblity if the dog should get kicked. I don't think you should be liable.

try one of the whistles that dogs can hear but not humans, or carry a bit of poly pipe and throw at it dont have to hit it but threatening it should do.

YO initially told me I could have my doggies at the yard providing they were on a lead....but the first day she met them she said I could let them loose as they were so well behaved

Dinnie often comes riding with me, although it was horrid the other day - she got attacked by one of the yard poodles (who is normally locked in the house) when we got back

Blinking good idea. Shame to leave the dogs at home and they seem to have a fab time romping about together. I just wish they did not have to do it under my youngsters feet or use my fresh stable straw as a dunny!

I agree with you, if you have your dog at the yard it should be under control & not annoying other people. My old spaniel used to potter about with me & was always at my heels, or she used to lie down & wait for me to come back from my ride if she didn't fancy coming. Now I have a greyhound, she is only let off the lead in the enclosed fields where the farmer says I can, on the yard she is either tied up & lies in or outside the kennel my dad made, or she sleeps in my van, I do not allow her to run around at 40mph chasing horses & annoying people & pooing everywhere, it is my responsibility to make sure she is safe & at the same time not causing a danger to anyone else.

Have you considered shutting doors so they can't get in your stable or at your hay?

I think it's a good thing for horses to be used to dogs running round their feet, helps with the bombproofing. Not agressive dogs though, they should be tied up/kept away.

We have dogs on our yard, which is fine with the majority of dogs, which have the sense to keep away from horses. The YO has two dogs, so obviously they're allowed on the yard and quite right too. They stay away from the horses, although they'll go in your stable to get a drink if you leave the door open, so I always shut mine!

However there is one dog that's an absolute lunatic... almost scared my Mum to death by jumping on her back and licking her ear when she was looking over the door at Genie! The YO is currently thinking of banning all dogs other than her own, which is her decision to make. I'll be quite glad to not find dog poop in front of my aubiose all the time!

My dog comes to yard with me every morning and every night - but if anyone else is at yard then he is tied up - if i'm there on my own which I am 90% of time he runs loose and he does faff around my horses but thats my problem if one of my own horses kicks him I have to deal with it - i would never allow him to pester anybody else or their horses and I always clear his cr@p up.

I am not a fan of outside dogs on yards I am afraid and am one of those obnoxious YO's who bans them. I tell clients that from the outset, before they even come to view.

Why?

Because I have cats, this is their home, why should they be harrassed by outside dogs? Someone once bought a friend up with a scraggy little mutt which promptly cornered one of the cats, cat fought back and drew blood, my fault for having a killer cat apparently, but what if the dog had finished what he so obviously intended? Not worth the risk.

My own dogs are very well behaved with visitors but this IS their home turf and why should I either lock them up when people come (which is anytime they like) or subject them to what they naturally view as intruders on their territory? If people don't like it then tough, go somewhere else, no skin off my nose.

I am a YO - my own two dogs run loose - but they are totally reliable, never bite/attack horses or people. My liveries are allowed to bring their dogs up - BUT they must be on a lead on the yards, are not allowed in the school. They are more than welcome to walk their dogs off their leads in fields without horses. But if I find any dog loose, chasing the horses, biting them or attacking either of my dogs then they are banned. I have no problem whatsoever with my dogs running loose around the horses, horses need to learn that dogs are fine. My cat is totally dog proof - I would not back any dog against him, a big black ex feral ex tom. All the horses on my yard are now quite happy with Bob ( the cat) appearing in front of them in the school or in the field. They all are comfortable with the dogs, My horses think it is absolutely normal to have a small dog running along side whilst being lunged. As a result my horses are great with dogs when out hacking

I used to be on a big yard where there were lots of loony dogs running havoc, not good. the owners just didn't seem to care and yes they came close to getting trodden on at times. We had our own dogs back then and only one of them was ever allowed (by us I might add) out at the yard as he was well behaved, didn't run around or go in anybodys stuff etc. the other two were always banished to the car if they were up there with us as they couldn't be trusted out even on a lead. I just wouldn't have it. I don't mind dogs on yards but please dog owners keep them under control!

My current yard is a sheep farm so no doggies allowed. I haven't got any dogs at the moment, but the other livery has (there is only the two of us lol) but she just keeps him in the car if he comes up there with her.

The pooping happened when I was mucking out!!!! Flaming dog rushed in and before I had a chance to shoo it away it was crouching down doing its business. Owner was horrified and offered to move the offending article, but then yesterday I grabbed the end of my hay to fill a net and got a soaking wet hand. Don't need to tell you what it was wet with. And I was not wearing a glove

YUK! Our individual hay is stored outside our stables, so it cant be kept out of the way unfortunately.

As for dog proofing my horses; the youngsters are remarkably good around the dogs. When leading a yearling out yesterday morning a dog bolted out of an open stable, totally unexpected, and shot straight through my filly's front legs and out under her tummy and bolted away. And it was a large collie! Not a small dog. Filly looked startled for a split second, but then just kept plodding on towards her field. It's my old mare who's jumpy and aggitated by dogs. It makes leading her out very difficult. I bred her myself and it was a young and over excited Collie dog chasing her as a foal which has left her nervous of dogs running around her. Even at 14 she's still intolerant of dogs and nervous if they run at her, and she'll really freak out if they're barking at the same time. If they're quiet dogs and just loafing about, she's fine with them. It's when the dogs are romping about around her, playing and barking, that it upsets mine. She's not a mare you'd ever want to take hunting!

This is the single best thing about having our own place now, no dogs, no kids. Neighbours dogs occasionally come into the field but seem to be no trouble, they never venture into the yard. Used to be on a yard where the YO said they had to be kept on a lead but nobody took any notice and there was one livery dog that used to just pee up everything, drove me nuts and if I shut my door someone else would just leave it open so the new bed was used as a toilet, gross. TBH if I'd ever caught one in the act it would have been ejected on the end of my boot, owner present or not!

there was a livery at our old yard who had a nutty dog that used to run riot, half the time she didn't even know where it was! one particular day my daughter had spread her rug out on the floor and the damn thing crapped on the rug.

People on our yard actually hack out and leave their dogs behind on the yard! Running about loose, doing whatever they want, until the owners come back from their hack. Personally, I'd be worried leaving my dog on its own like that.

I really don't dislike having the dogs around. They're all a really friendly and sweet natured bunch, but it's just I wish they'd be kept away from my area and away from the back of my old mare when I'm leading her out!

My dog always comes on to our yard, he is well behaved and shats himself with the horses. When i school my mare he goes in the car.when i hack out if i go on the YO's land i'll take him. I ALWAYS clear up his poo as i agree its disgusting to tread in or smell.. Dog owners should be responsible as much as horse owners ie if your dog is belting around with others (as much as they are enjoying themselves) ultimately the yard is for horses not dogs so owners should put them in the car. My thoughts..

My YO's dogs run loose which I dont mind. They are nice and friendly and dont normally get in the way and the majority of the time they will go away when you tell them to but the pooing and weeing in the hay/straw is annoying. Not sure how that can be stopped though.

Other liveries dogs are banned but some will take them for walks away from the yard which is ok.

I really don't like dogs on yards as even if some are completely under control and don't poo and wee everywhere, there will always be at least one person with a dog who lets it run riot and be a danger to everyone else. Luckily, I'm at a yard that doesn't allow dogs. Those that have dogs often leave them in the car which is fine and walk them whilst they are at the yard, they are allowed on for a drink after walks as long as they are kept on the lead but that's all.

Spyda, I don't know of one livery yard in my area that will allow dogs on them. They have to be kept in the car.

Your yard, your rules. Simple as.
