How far is acceptable?

I got a mouthful yesterday from an owner because I had moved a horse to a rested paddock which meant a walk of maybe 200m from the barn, all of 100m further than before,. Completely unreasonable I was informed. Really? For an able bodied person?

Oh, and I have it in my contracts that I reserve the right to move any horse where I see fit.

I was so stunned that I didn't say anything, probably just as well ;)

Our horses have been moved onto a field with more grass that is at least a 15 minute round trip. If my horse is happy then i dont give a monkeys how far i have to walk!!

About 50 metres at the moment and about 100m in when move to other paddock.
Walked a lot further at previous yards though.

Have previously had walks of up to a mile or so to get to fields. Current yard is about 20 meters or so. This is one of the reasons I left previous yard and love my current (had several inbetween tho) however I have badly injured ankles - injury occured at yard with long walk and I became unable to get to my field but they weren't able to provide a closer one.
It is something thats very important when I look at a yard but if I was able bodied and walking didn't hurt then wouldn't bother me at all - it's nice having a walk along with my horse (and hopefully dog depending on the yard)

I like my horse in the field that best suits her needs. That field cannot always be right next to the yard by plain logic! At the moment it's about a 10 min round trip, sometimes its more. My yard manager does try to use the fields next to the yard in the winter when people are up on dark mornings and evenings which I think is very thoughtful.

I know of people who have a good 10 minute walk to their fields in summer! I'm very fortunate that mine are close to the yard whichever paddock they are in (good as I have to take water out to the fields), however I used to be on a yard which was a 15 minute round trip to their field and it was fine, I just allowed extra time!

About 10 mins each way, it's the furthest away field from the yard lol. I'm not good with distances though so not sure how far exactly? Pain in the winter when it's pitch black and raining but I have a good torch and an array of hi-viz! Worth it for a big, drier field.

About a three/four minute round trip - longer if I do what I sometimes do and lean on the fence and just watch them for a bit :).

When they were in the four acre last summer it was a good ten mins round trip - and only if I power walked.

P

Ours isn't very far, but I have been at yards with fields quite a trek away. It's more important that it's the right field for the horse.
Sounds like a lazy livery

About 10 metres :D but as others have posted, as long as I have grass and my horse is safe then I couldn't care less how far I'd have to walk, keeps me a bitf fitter at least!

Some of leased fields at our yard are 25 min hack, we ride to them and someone comes and picks us and tack up. Other summer field is 15 min hack. Same thing picked up. Fields at yard are for use only when dry but we do have 7 sand turnout all year paddocks

Oh and thats each way so could take 1hr 20 mins or so if you wanted pony back on the yard, but its normally youngsters or retired ones that go that far.

About a minute either way lol But there are some fields that a bit further away, wouldn't bother me as long as the horses needs were met!

Last yard about 20 minutes. So by the time you have been and fetched them and then turned out, extra 40 minutes added on to trip to yard. Lazy, no, pressed for time, yes

15 minute trip round. Nightmare bringing in as said horse is dead lazy. Would love him to be nearer but be is in a massive field with good grass so can't complain.

It was only an issue when the trough broke and it took YO a month to fix it. Which meant a month of lugging water containers down. Not fun.

Only about 20 yds now, but have had a couple of hundred yards in the past. It wasn't a problem at all, used to hop on and ride it when I felt particularly lazy!

About a 5 minute stroll, nothing serious. I did dismiss another yard because the fields were quite a walk and if there's ever an accident, it would be tricky to get a horse box there or the vet there in a hurry.

One yard I was at, you have to leave the yard, walk round the corner and down the lane to turnout mares, not ideal if you have a naughty!

I've been at a yard where the summer turnout was either diddy paddocks next to the barn, or a 10 min hack away. Was a riding school too, so anything that was having a day or two off got taken to the massive field, and anything that was being worked a lot stayed in the little fields next to the yard.

Current yard is max 2-3mins walk each way. Battling through the layers of electric fencing takes longer!

Only reason I'd be miffed if horse had moved to lush field was if I was watching weight etc, or if I knew he was in the closest one and I was short of time and came down to find him in the furthest one without being told...

Depends which field they are in... right now about half a mile.

I quite enjoy the walk though.

When I had my horse I had the choice of 2 fields, one was a slopping field close to the yard with a stream in it that attracted a lot of midges, and the other was a nice flat pasture with some nice shelter. I chose the nice flat one with shelter because it seemed like the nicer field for the horse. I had a 10 minute walk to that field, which granted in the winter was not fun but in the summer it was lovely.
Dig you heels in and tell the lazy livery to like it or lump it, keeping horses is not all about fun.

My field is a quarter of a mile along the road from the yard.

Which is why I don't visit the yard much - about once every two months or so! No reason to go there, I don't have a stable, we ride from the field.

About 15 yards:D. Have had to walk much further but always accepted it

Mine is normally a good 7 min walk.... but at the moment it takes 20 mins to walk there and 25mins back.... ankle is not good at all.... but the horses support me on the way to the field and the very slow pace has been an excellent training aid for the youngster and the ex racer - they are both very kind and wait for me, although the ex racer does not like the walking stick - so i have stopped using this.

Its longer on the way back as I dont have anything to lean on and plus I am knackerd.

The field gives them 5 acres, good grass, plenty of established hedges and shelter - they YM does let me use the top paddock if I am having a particulary bad day - or she will turn out for me - but the top paddock is the jump field and its not fair to the rest of the yard if they cannot use the field - we have so litle chance to ride in it.
