... to someone on the same yard? Bit of a hypothetical question, I'm not selling one of mine. I'm just wondering, how would people feel about selling a horse but having to see it every day (assuming you'd get another) doing possibly better or worse etc. than it did with you? Would it make a difference why you were selling? Would you feel happier selling to someone you know and be glad to still see the horse and how its getting on? Would you only be happy to sell a horse to somewhere you wouldn't have to see it, once you have given up control over its future? Opinions please.

i wouldnt. it would be very hard to not get involved if you saw them doing something you didnt agree with, they could also not like it, the fact that you know the horse and what it does/doesnt like etc. Plus, if it went very wrong, ie, say the horse got ill, that you could not have forseen, it could get nasty on the yard if they thought you had sold them a 'dud one'
much nicer to see the horse maybe somewhere local, but not in your face on the same yard?
but then again, i dont sell horses so have no experience of this!

i sold my shettie to someone on the same yard and id never do it with another horse. said shettie is allowed free roam of its paddock full of lush grass and looks like a barrell. Did offer plenty of advice and made enough lamin noises which all fell on deaf ears! have since left that yard for other reasons but i think it would be worse selling a rideable horse to someone on the same yard

I personally would as it would mean I would still see them. Before I got pickle he was owned by 4 different people on the same livery yard! no one got rid of him because of his behavior or anything like that! they finally had to sell off the yard as someone way too small for him bought him just to try and keep him on the yard and just found him too much.

I don't think I would because the person may not look after the horse as I wanted. Also if things went wrong I would feel terrible.

I personally wouldn't because I would find it too difficult to cope with, especially if it was a horse I didn't want to see but had to. I would rather sell it to someone local but not to the person in the next stable.

I bought the pony from my YO and I'm still there but personally I wouldn't... I like things done a certain way and if I saw that they weren't doing it that way I wouldn't be happy

I have sold to someone on the yard.
It worked out really well. They knew Kavi brilliantly before they bought him so knew his quirks etc.
I was lovely still being able to see him every day and it meant he didn't have to move yards and become unsettled.
The person who bought him, did so to do very different things on him than i did so there was no worries in that sense.
I sold Kavi about 8 yrs ago and he is still with the people i sold him too, has done really really well and i still get to see him/hear about him even though i have since moved yards.
You do have to be able to detatch yourself from the horse though as i can imagine it being difficult otherwise.

Ditto. I'm actually kind of interested in a horse on my yard that may come up for sale. I'm just wondering how likely it would be to put the owner in an uncomfortable position if I were to approach her about it and if anyone really would be 100% OK with their old horse staying on the same yard.

My daughter brought her pony from a lady at our yard. Was hard at first as she was always there and found it hard seeing us treat him differently to her. She sent him away to be school then never rode him, hand fed treats all the time. My daughter adores him and doing well with him. This lady still gets upset when she sees him doing things and wishes he was hers. She also reminds us when farrier needed and dentist and even books us in. She buts in if ever vet is called as well. Not done in a nasty way but seems to make her feel she still has a say. Does upset my daughter sometime though. Plus we share a field with her...

i think it would be an advantage , i would already know the person well and would know if they were suitable for the horse , as for seeing it doing well with them after , i would be chuffed , i certainly wouldnt interfere with how they rode handled it but then i would know before that they were capable , to me its a win win situation as i get to see the horse everyday lol

Probably not as I would watch their every move to make sure they weren't doing anything I didn't agree with. There are many people on my yard I would trust with Tyler and although I know they would be fantastic with him, it all comes down to the maternal protectiveness instinct lol.

I think it would be much nicer for the horse. They wouldn't have to go through the trauma and change of moving to a new home and dealing with a new rider all in one. They could stay in a familiar environment instead.

Done it twice now and haven't really regretted it, both horses went to lovely owners. It was nice to see them getting so much pleasure out of horses I'd trained. It can be a bit difficult because people do things differently to the way you may have done but you just have to accept that. I found other people more difficult as in ones that say, "have you seen what so and so is doing with whosit", answer is its their horse they can do as the please. Suppose if thought horse was being mistreated might be more difficult but luckily never had that problem.

I sold my daughters pony to someone who intended to sell her on but ended up keeping her for his step daughter (selling step daughters pony instead). I did think it would be difficult but it hasnt been....I obviously take a keen interest in how she is doing but that is because I want step daughter and pony to do well....biggest supporter. I help when they ask me to but dont interfere and have become best friends with the step daughters mum so everything is great.
