Liverpool wood pellets under straw bed??

I have a hideously wet horse (aside from that she is suprisingly clean). Shavings are a complete no go (think 4 bales a week!!) so straw has worked out the most sensible option (plus I love big, deep straw beds!!). I usually deep litter in winter, taking the wet out once a month and for the last few winters have laid a bale of shavings at the base of the bed in the area she wees with a lovely thick straw bed on top. However, she still soaks the base in a short space of time and I still end up taking wet out monthly (think about 8 soden barrows worth!!).

I've noticed a lot of positive things about the LWP on here and wondered whether they work as a deep litter option and whether it is worth a go instead of shavings as a base?? Will certainly work out cheaper if they are indeed 4 times more absorbant than shavings as claimed!!

Any ideas?
 
They are great, but you would still need a half decent bed underneath to work well

Fortunately miss T only pees on the back 1/3 of her bed so was thinking of chucking down 2-3 bags on the area she pees, giving a brief water with watering can and then chucking the usual 4 bales of straw on top (effectively what I do with shavings except only use 1 bale of those.) I just want something with a v. high absorbancy so hopefully I can avoid that horrible squeltchy feeling that appears within a fortnight (no matter how much clean I put down!). Had thought about doing a full bed with the stuff but if her performance on shavings is anything to go on its a big no no (think every poo scattered into a million pieces all over the bed - fortunately she doesn't do this on straw!)

Can you buy individual bags from Corley and do they deliver?

I would say it should work fine. If you're going to put them underneath a straw bed I wouldn't bother wetting them, just leave them whole and they will absorb even more.
 
It will work well, though as dwi has said, dont soak them

I put my gelding on wood pellets for the same reason you are thinking about it. Frankly, I would just go for the wood pellets on their own. Digging out the wet patch(es) is so easy with them, and you don't end up stinking like you do when you muck out straw.

I hope they are as successful for you as they have been for us.
 
Sounds like a good plan, I have just been and picked up some pellets from LWP, why do you say buy from Corley instead-are they better/cheaper?
 
As above the guys are VERY helpful, no problem to deal with and their prices are ver reasonable plus they deliver when they say they will.

I used the pellets under my shaving bed, i put them mainly where i knew Vienna pee'd found they very usefull for this purpose. Although felt using shavings and pellets defeated the purpos, in saying that they did come in very handy when the shaving shortage hit and i suppose it did save money on shavings.

They are pretty easy to deal with you just gently soak them then put them in your bed and put your shavings on top, if you use them they way i did. A full bed of pellets is totally different.

I've not used straw so cant comment on this.

would it not be easier just to not deep litter. In the winter i muck out properly daily and it only takes about 15 - 20 mins. I can't imagine what a nightmare of a job it must be after a month. My mare is quite wet too.
Hope you find a solution.
 
I used Liverpool wood pellets last summmer underneath straw for my very messy wet 16.2 mare and foal.They were much more absorbent than shavings under straw which I used to begin with.I put 3 bags in the wet area.As the other posters say,don't bother wetting the pellets under straw.
I found this system so good that I will use it again for next years foal too.
