I am thinking of using Wood Pellets as an alternative to shavings and would be grateful if anyone using them can let me know how well they work on a semi deep littered system compared to Bedmax/shavings. Also is this company good to deal with?
 
Thanks for your reply, if possible could you let me know how many horses do you have on this bedding and how many bags a week do you use in each stable? Also did you wet it when you first put the bed down? I am looking at putting 2 x horses on it and would like to get a rough idea of how many bags I should order to get started.
 
Thanks, if you do a search on this I've posted on them several times recently. It seems that alot of people have discovered them in the last month or so, I only hope the price doesn't go up if they become popular!

I really like them. Cheaper and easier to muck out than shavings as well as being much more absorbent. You do need to deep litter but thats really easy once you get the hang of it.
 
i use it-mixed with megazorb.t5he horses have fully matted stables too.
i dont soak it before use
top up with one a bag a week.(the horses are 15.2-16.2h sport horse types, two are quite wet and one is really messy on normal beds.)
took 2 bags megazorb plus 5-6 bags pellets to start the bed
works great
i get 1/2 barrow max out daily and the beds are really dry,clean and no dust.
quick delivery and great to deal with.
 
I have 5 horses on them, ranging from desperately messy to tidy, I haven't watered them as I have just incorporated them into existing beds, I top up roughly every 4 days with one bag. It probably would take quite a few bags to set up a bed as they are not very big, but as a general rule for me it works out 1,5 bag of LWP is equivalent to 1 bag of shavings...
It can be stored outside and the best deal is on 100 bags on a palet - it works out at £2,45 a bag delivered, so I would advise to order big palet

I'm using them with semi deep litter over mats and love them!
I'm probably not the best person to ask as I don't worry too much what the beds look like as long as they are deep and warm enough; yes, I like a nice clean bed but my lot trash any new bed within days so I've given up wanting pristine!
To start with, I soaked two bags per box and spread them about on top of the original shavings bed. It was hard working out how much water to use at first but now I use a watering can for two bags at a time which starts to soften them, then mixing in with the bed and that seems to work well. The beds have dried out amazingly even though I haven't taken any of the wet under shavings out yet as it's not really deep litter if you start doing that! So far, two bags of pellets last a week although I do wonder if I had used more pellets to start with whether I would get away with only one bag a week; will have to experiment with a couple of the boxes to find out.
I've started one bed from scratch on pellets alone, used 8 bags damped down well. Bed is now 4 nights old, still has a lot of pellets in it although it is bedding down nicely, is fluffy and as dry as a bone. That bed I expect to only have to use one bag a week on.
I used Sundown Yellow last year which I loved but with supply being a bit difficult I went back to shavings only to have the same thing happen! I hope I'm luckier with the pellets because they are a real find!
 
HI there, I have also been curious about LWP. currently i use easibed. i deep litter only taking poo out during the week. i dig out at the weekends and always put half a bag of megazorb down under the bed in their pee patch. I have been wondering if LWP would be a cheaper alternative to the megazorb. I have to use easibed(yard rule) but we are allowed to mix a little megazorb in! Someone told me that they must be wetted down as they look like ponynuts & horses may eat them by mistake? But some of you use them without dampening, Im assuming you have had no problems?
 
i think the people that use them without wetting them first are adding them to existing beds so the moisture in the bed will activate them. I've just ordered 500 kg of LWP as currently using aquamax.mine have a half bed made up of 1 bag (aquamax 13kg compared to 10kg LWP) and by the end of the week its all taken out and a new bag put in so i do wet them everytime.
 
Have you tried Corley Bio-Wood, advertising on Horse and Hound business finder? There coming up cheaper than Liverpool Wood Pellets.
 
ive just started these borrowed 8 bags off a friend started the bed with 7 a week ago and only added the one bag !!!

the bed has grown huge in a week - the horse is really dirty and we used to take the whole bed out daily and he would have a wet floor but with this the stable is dry and he can have a thick bed with banks !!!

Im actually a little amazed with the stuff just ordered 200 bags of it !!! works out at 2.25 a bag !! probably use between 1 and 3 bags per horse per week depending on how clean they are x
 
I'm on day 2 of Aquamax pellets. Not sure I'd buy Aquamax as can be dusty but bed is deep, dry and a doddle to muck out. Am actually impressed with it. I am using shavings as well and added Aquamax as a base and put shavings on top and its great. So a convert so far here. Going to add to my other horses bed as well.
