I brought my new horse to my livery yard last week, he's currently on box rest but is now able to go back out in a starvation paddock. I was told by my YO that a field would be sorted for him. He's unable to go in with my other horse as he already shares with a pony and my YO wants to keep them as they are, plus there's too much grass. Today my YO told me I need to buy my own fencing. Iv come away and thought bout it and it's really annoyed me! Can they do this? I'm on DIY and pay £140 each horse per month with no discount. How would you feel?

Id be pretty annoyed. If I was paying 15 a week per horse, then I would be happy to buy my own fencing, But when Im paying 35 a week per horse.. I would be very annoyed!

Lou x

I wouldn't be buying my own fencing! You were told a field would be sorted for him, and as YO surely it's their responsibility! If they provided electric tape and wanted you to put it up then that would be a bit different, but why should you fork out for the fencing? If you moved they'd probably be annoyed if you took YOUR fencing with you!

You dont say why they asked you to buy your own electric fencing. Is this for strip grazing??
I have to say £140 per horse is very expensive for DIY.
I have been on a DIY yard and had to buy my own fencing (and it had to be green tape with green posts!!!), but was happy to do this as I was on a DIY contract. Would have felt differently if I was on a full livery contract.

If its for strip grazing within a field that is normal for DIY livery. If you were on full maybe different. We have fenced fields as it were but if we needed to restrict the area for whatever reason we would be expected to sort this out ourselves.

Yeah that's how I feel. Also he wants me to fence some of my other horses field off to make this paddock so there will be less grass for him and he's a poor doer. I feel £140 a month is a lot of money, the facilities are good there when u can use them (lots of competitions on) but my new horse can only be a light hack due to arthritis so he won't be using them as much! It's a great yard, both horses are settled, more so than ever so I don't wanna move but I can't see a way through this! They have plenty of new paddocks just created but the grass is knee high so unsuitable. They also have a few with nothing in but won't allow him in there as they're being rested! I'm at my wits end! I agree, if you want to limit the gazing in the field the YO has given you, then you need to buy the fencing yourself, what you pay doesn't matter really.

if you was on fully livery then that would be different

I'd understand having to fence it off if it was within his own field but having to make him a field from scratch with my own fencing seems a bit much, if you see what I mean. I feel that I should be provided with a stable and field already done, especially when everyone else has their fields provided. Also if not been given any more space for my new horse, so I'm trying to squeeze in extra hay, bedding and feed in! I'm paying for 2 so surely I should be entitled to twice as much space! I say this but it's in one ear and out the other!

Sorry to rant! Feel better for getting it off my chest but Aagghhhh!!!

I also assumed that you had to section off a area within a field - so I aslo agree with T_bag - can you go talk to your YO/YM and have a sensible disscussion about it (FWIW - I still had the same about of space for my two's things as people with one horse) and pay ALOT more than you for DIY

Well yeah you would assume, it's just not right is it! Next they'll be asking u to build your own stables! Well, no they'll be asking me to! LOL!

hellspells really? Good god, maybe there's no hope for me then! I thought I paid a lot, blimey! I will have to c the YO tonight and have a word.

Yep I do indeed - alot, lot, lot more!!! I;d go talk to the YO nicely and just see if you can come to a compromise. Good luck

Having offered you your own field and then not providing one demonstrates that this persons word can not be trusted.

However, if you are happy in the yard then buy some electric fencing, energiser, a couple of large batteries (so that one can be charged up while other is being used) and battery and charger and get a receipt which you should keep in a safe place. Mark everything with your name and home post code to demonstrate that it is your property and photograph it before assembling it. This way there uis no way he can claim it is his!

Has the yards and curtilage of the fields got good horse proof fencing so that if they get out of the electric they can not get out of the yard? Make sure that each of your horses has third party public liability insurance of no less than £10,000,000 per horse so that if it escapes your are covered. Horse owners are responsible for any damage caused by their horses (ruling from recent court case demonstrated this).

I think a lot of you should view this from the YO point of view. It is not their fault this horse needs a stavation paddock so I think it is a reasonable request to ask the horse owner to buy some electic fencing.
If you are not happy with the charges for the livery then this is a seperate issue and maybe you should move yards.
I think you would probably have the same problem somewhere else re turn out.
DIY liveries are barely worth the money that they are charged. Full and part liveries are far more worth while financially and less hassle all round.
Give some thought to the cost of running a livery yard as I am nearly bankrupt after constantly trying to do the best by my liveries who love to complain about how much everything cost them....they have no idea what it is like to try and keep everyone happy at the same time.
Just remember your stables could be filled by full liveries!!!
