Following on from an earlier thread,

who pays a deposit at their livery yard?

& if you dont mind me asking how much is it?

I have read the other thread and sympathise with the OP. In theory a deposit for delapidations/unpaid bills sounds like a reasonable idea but I also recall horror stories where (some) YOs have also been exceptionally unreasonable when liveries give notice to leave. There could be no guarantee that this would work fairly for all parties.

At our new yard we pay a month in advance, and we also paid a months deposit each. I think it is a good idea, we haven't had to on any other yard though

Good point about the trust though. I'm sure there are as many yo as liverys who might take the mick. Fortunatly I trust our new yo, wouldn't have trusted the old one with it though tbh!!

I've put yes, I pay a week in advnace for the stable but that's all. I do try and pay the livery at the beginning of the month so I know roughly how much money I have left, but it's not a requirement. If you want to reserve a stable so no-one else can take it you have to pay stable fees.

my last place I paid 2 weeks deposit which I got back in full when we left. I was about to go to a new yard last month however, they asked for a deposit which I paid. Then to be told it wasnt a deposit but a holding fee as they could have let the stables several times over in the 2 weeks before I got there!

I told them go to get lost, but lost my money. my hsuban said, so weve given you money for nothing, the reply back was yes!
it wasnt enough to go to court for but still money Id worked hard to earn as i run my own business. As said some horror stories out there.

At my current yard you just pay a month in advance and so this is used as a deposit. Seems to work very well.

Used to be somewhere where liveries paid at the end of the month (eg. for the month just past), and yard owner had a terrible job getting some of them to pay on time, and a few did just leave without paying :(

thankyou for all your replies :)

im mainly curious as we are hopefully opening our livery yard next year & wondered how many people felt it was the thing to do. When i was at uni i paid a £50 deposit on the stable which was returned in ful when i left & i also paid a month in advance. However at the other yard i have been at we left no deposit & paid in advance. To me it seems more professional to have to pay a deposit, you have to do so on houses, flats, etc, so why no a stable which your horse is 'lodging' in. However, I can understand people concerns over not getting the money back, or being 'charged' for damage that is felt as reasonable wear.

I didn't and I am not planning on moving but I would be more than happy to do so. Would be happy to pay a month in advance and the equiv' for a deposit.

I pay in advance.

I asked for a deposit AND a month in advance. Then if notice given, their last month is paid for AND if all is well when they leave, they get the deposit back.....a nice incentive to keep things good! But no-one has left yet! :D

I paid a months livery as a deposit plus pay a months part-livery in advance. A lot of money to come up with in one month - nearly £1000.

Am not impressed with yard owner though as another livery whose horse accidentally trampled on her has had her whole deposit taken for "loss of earnings". IMO it was the YO fault as she was insisting ontrying to pick off very painful mud fever scabs and the horse was giving all the warning signs of not being very happy and eventually panicked and tried to jump out of her way by leaping over her and knocked her down and stood on her. I don't think deposits are for this - they should be for damage over and above normal wear and tear i.e your horse kicks a hole through the stable wall. And certainly not for this type of incident.

Nope, I haven't.

on one yard, you simply paid weekly (not in advance).
On the other three, there was supposed to be a deposit of one months livery BUT each yard has said "I look ok and like I wouldn't muck them about" so deposit is not necessary. Each month's livery is in advance however.

Deposit's would have been £80, £76 and £48.
